World Basketball Cup Announces Format Change For Tournament

October 30, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The World Basketball Cup (www.worldbasketballcup.com) today announced a format change for the professional basketball tournament scheduled in Atlanta, Georgia in July/August 2010. According to Joe Newman, ABA/WBC CEO, "After extensive contacts with organizations, leagues and teams worldwide, we found that the qualifying tournament format would not work due to prior commitments, league play and other factors. So, the decision was made to do away with the qualifying tournaments and to have teams worldwide enter the single elimination tournament in Atlanta instead. The goal is to have 64 professional teams competing with a format similar to the NCAA Tournament. With the new format, the response from Asia, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East has been excellent and we hope to fill the 64 slots quickly."

"Another consideration for the change," added ABA/WBC COO Quentin Townsend, "is so that more than one team from a country can participate in the tournament. The earlier a team enters, the sooner it can begin promoting its participation and begin to maximize the potential of sponsorships, media, merchandising and other things. Entering the WBC should give a team great prestige and awareness and we will begin to announce participating teams shortly. One final note, the WBC will be open to teams from other professional leagues in the US in addition to the ABA entries."
