10.09.09 - Worcester 3 - Bridgeport 4 SO - Arena at Harbor Yard

The Sharks stormed back after trailing 3-1 to force overtime but fell in the shootout in Bridgeport on Friday. John McCarthy scored his first professional goal in the first period to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead before the Sound Tigers rattled off three straight goals. Ryan Vesce scored early in the 2nd period and Brandon Mashinter scored his first professional goal late in the third period to force OT. Worcester was denied a score in the shootout by Mikka Koskinen while the Sound Tigers received goals by Trevor Smith and Greg Mauldin. Mashinter also added an assist and a fight for the Gordie Howe hat trick while Nicholas Petrecki received his first professional fighting major with a bout against Michael Haley in the first period. Worcester outshot Bridgeport 35-27.

10.10.09 - Worcester 5 - Lowell 4 - Tsongas Arena

Brandon Mashinter scored twice, Derek Joslin added three assists and Tyson Sexsmith made 32 saves in his first professional start as the Sharks defeated the Devils 5-4 in Lowell on Saturday night. The Sharks scored first for the third straight game as Dan DaSilva notched his first at :43 seconds with a rebound score after a shot by Joslin. After the Devils tied the score, Mashinter rattled off two straight power play goals and the Sharks never looked back. Dwight Helminen scored his first goal in a Sharks uniform and Logan Couture added an empty netter for Worcester. The Sharks went 3for7 on the power play while the Devils went 1for5. Tyson Sexsmith made 32 saves in net for his first professional start while former Shark Gerald Coleman made 28 saves for the Devils.

Sharks in the Atlantic

The Sharks are currently swimming in third place with five points (2-0-0-1) in the Atlantic Division trailing Bridgeport and Manchester by one point for first place. The Wolf Pack and Bruins are tied for 4th place with four points while the Devils are 6th with three points. The Falcons and the Pirates are tied for 7th with just two points in a very choppy Atlantic Division.

Shark Bites:

*Captains for the 2009-10 season: Captain Ryan Vesce (2nd year), Assistant Captains Derek Joslin (2nd year) and Mike Moore (1st year).

*Five more to 400....With the victory in Lowell, head coach Roy Sommer has 395 career victories in the AHL.

*You always remember your first.....Kevin Henderson played his first professional game in Bridgeport on Friday while Dennis McCauley, Louis Liotti, and Tyson Sexsmith did the same in Lowell on Saturday. The Sharks have had 10 players make their professional debuts over the last three games.

*Young Guns....The average age of the Sharks roster is 23 which includes 13 rookies, five 2nd year players and two third year players. At the age of 28, Danny Groulx is the oldest while Nicholas Petrecki at 20 years old and three months is the youngest.

*Take the college or juniors route....the Sharks have 13 players from the college ranks (seven from hockey east), nine from juniors and two players that played in both.

*Massachusetts... The Sharks have four players born and raised in Massachusetts (John McCarthy - Boston, Corey Quirk - Brockton, Dennis McCauley - Billerica, and Joe Callahan - Brockton)

*You're tall.... Worcester has eight players over six-foot-three.

*Road Trip!....Worcester has points in eight straight regular season road games (7-0-0-1) dating back to last season (franchise record) .

*Perfect Aim... Brandon Mashinter has three goals on three shots on goal this season!

*Who's that in net?.. Tyson Sexsmith made 32 saves in net on Saturday in Lowell for his first professional win in his first professional start. Sexsmith had 113 wins over the last three seasons with Vancouver in the WHL.

*Streakers... Dan DaSilva is the only Sharks to have recorded a point in all three games (1-2-3). Brandon Mashinter has goals in two straight games (3-1-4). McCarthy, Trevelyan, and Vesce all currently have two game points streaks.

*Early starts...The Sharks are one of two teams in the AHL to have scored the first goal in every game this season. (Hamilton is the other).

*All four years....Defenseman Derek Joslin is the only Sharks player to suit up in all four seasons in Worcester.

*You are Special... Worcester has the best power play in the AHL with a 31.3% (5-16).

*Five for fighting...The Sharks have three fighting major penalties this season through three games...Nicholas Petrecki recorded his first professional bout on Friday against Michael Haley and Brandon Mashinter dropped the gloves against Brett Westgarth. (Brandon Mashinter 2, Nicholas Petrecki 1) The Sharks had 78 fighting majors last season, 68 fighting majors in 2007-08 and 54 in 2006-07.

Jason Demers has three points (0-3-3) and leads the team with a +3 through five games. Frazer McLaren received his first NHL fighting major in San Jose's home opener against the Blue Jackets' Derek Dorsett. Jamie McGinn has six pims in three games. Brad Staubitz has two pims in one game. Thomas Greiss has seen 27:16 of ice time in net allowing just one goal.

Former Worcester Shark Devin Setoguchi has five points (4-1-5) through five games.
