Worcester Sharks Raise Over $100,000 for Charities

WORCESTER - Worcester Sharks President Michael A. Mudd announced that the Worcester Sharks and their fan base raised over $100,000 for various charitable causes through Sharks Charities during the 2010-11 season.

"The entire Sharks organization, our sponsors, and our fans feel an obligation to do our part and support the Central Massachusetts and greater Worcester community," said Mudd. "Every little bit helps, whether it is monetarily or from a volunteer standpoint, we should all make an effort to support our community neighbors."

Highlights from the 2010-11 Worcester Sharks community efforts included:

* Sharks players and staff teamed up for the 2nd Annual Community Service Day and revamped the exterior and playgrounds of the Columbus Park Elementary School in Worcester. Over $7,500 in renovations were performed which included the reconfiguration of the outside playgrounds, landscaping the school grounds, construction of new benches, and the painting of the inside and outside of the school. In addition, the team constructed an outside street hockey rink with equipment donated by Franklin Sports of Stoughton.

* The first annual Worcester Sharks youth hockey equipment giveaway presented by WeRENTcentralmass.com benefited 100 youth hockey families that received free hockey equipment. More than $10,000 worth of hockey equipment was given away, including slightly used hockey gloves, skates, helmets and pads. In addition, $250 was collected for the Rodman Ride for Kids to benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts. The equipment was collected by the Leaders of Tomorrow of Shrewsbury, and the Sharks.

* Over 1,000 pounds of food were collected in part with the 5th Annual Worcester County Sheriff's Department Food Drive presented by Price Chopper, which was donated to the Friendly House of Worcester.

* Give "Moore" for the Holidays - Sharks player toy drive. Now in its 3rd season, Sharks defensemen Nick Petrecki and Mike Moore rallied their teammates to participate by purchasing toys for children from Community Healthlink of Worcester. Sharks players treated several families to a hockey game and a total of $3,000 of toys. In addition, the team collected out of pocket donations from his teammates and provided $1,000 and a Joe Thornton signed jersey to benefit paralyzed Norwood hockey player Matt Brown's foundation, Brownie Points.

* 4rd Annual Hat and Mittens Holiday Skate with the Sharks presented by BayState Savings Bank. The Hat & Mittens Holiday Skate with the Sharks was free and open to the public. All participants were kindly asked to bring a new winter hat, mittens or scarf with them to the event, as all collected items were donated to Community Health Link, Inc. of Worcester.

* Worcester Sharks forward T.J. Trevelyan donated $950 in part of "T.J. goals for Charity". T.J. gave $50 for every goal scored to Team Cystic Fibrosis Northeast. The Sharks Booster Club ($500) also graciously donated for a total of $1,450 to Team CF.

* Over 2,000 students participated in the highly popular "Reading is Cool" program where a Sharks player and FINZ read to local school children to emphasize the importance of reading. Each child received a free Sharks ticket compliments Sharks Charities.

* The Sharks and other community leaders teamed up with the Red Cross in a call for action for the tornado victims of Joplin, Missouri with an outdoor fundraiser on May 25. $2,500 was raised during the afternoon as every donor received free ice cream and was entered to win some great raffle prizes.

Additionally; Sharks players, staff, FINZ, and the Street Brigade, made over 300 community appearances to schools, hospitals, hockey rinks, and special events throughout central Massachusetts and the greater Worcester area. Over 15,000 Sharks tickets were donated to local organizations via Sharks Charities.

Sharks Charities, lead by Chairwoman of Sharks Charities, Ms. Mary DeFeudis, is dedicated to meeting the educational, social and cultural needs of our community and is proud to partner with local organizations, in an effort to enhance the lives of residents throughout Central Massachusetts, with a focus on youth.

The Worcester Sharks remain extremely active during the offseason with over 100 community appearances throughout Central Massachusetts. Worcester Sharks Summer Days presented by Irving Oil, TCG Network Services, and Franklin Sports, includes player and mascot appearances, Sharks Street Brigades, and the SharkHead Shootout.
