Three current rehabbing Boston Red Sox players are the first three batters in the WooSox lineup tonight...Isiah Kiner-Falefa leads off at 2B, Roman Anthony bats second in LF, and Trevor Story hits third playing SS.
AUGUST 25th SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE (28-20)/(65-57) at WORCESTER (27-23)/(63-58) 6:05 pm
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders LHP Kyle Carr (0-1, 4.61) vs. Worcester Red Sox RHP Jedixson Paez (0-1, 3.68)
Sox vs. Yanks...A Prelude - The Worcester Red Sox hope a return to Polar Park - where they have won 13 of their last 19 home games - can right themselves from their recent spiral (losing 8 of their last 9 games overall) when they begin their penultimate homestand of the season tonight at 6:05 pm. The WooSox will be hosting the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA-Yankees) this week/weekend in the first of six critical games this evening. The Sox and RailRiders will play four night games starting tonight through Friday (all at 6:05 pm) and then face each other over the weekend for games on Saturday at 4:05 pm and Sunday at 1:05 pm. This series between these long-time Triple-A rivals - dating back to 1989 when the Scranton/WB Red Barons played the Pawtucket Red Sox - acts as a prelude to a huge upcoming series at the Major League level when the Boston Red Sox (the #2 American League wild card) face the New York Yankees (the #1 wild card) for a 4-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium beginning Friday night. Tonight's series and homestand opener at Polar Park is live on NESN+ and can be heard on NASH 98.9 FM and The Pike 100.1 FM.
Roman's Return - Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony will continue his injury rehab assignment by joining the WooSox tonight batting second and playing leftfield.
Anthony was placed on Boston's injured list on May 7 (retroactive to May 5) with a right hand/wrist sprain suffered while swinging during Boston's game on May 4 at Detroit. The injury was officially diagnosed as a rare partial tear of the ligament/tendon in his right ring finger/hand. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 28 and has missed the last 95 Red Sox games (through August 23).
Roman began his 20-day rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on August 18 and played in four games with the Sea Dogs (2 in LF & 2 as the DH) going 3-for-11 with 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, and 4 SO. His first game last Tuesday vs. the Reading Fightin' Phils was his best as he demolished a long 2-run HR to right, lined a single to left, and walked twice in his four plate appearances.
Anthony appeared in 30 games for the Red Sox this season batting .229 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 5 RBI. He did have 20 walks and an OBP of .354. Prior to the start of the season, Roman was selected to Team USA's roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic where he belted two important home runs and led the team with 7 RBI.
Roman, 22, made his Major League debut with Boston on June 9, 2025 and had a terrific rookie season hitting .292 in 71 games with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 8 HR & 32 RBI. His OBP (.396) and OPS (.859) were among the best on the team. He finished 3rd in 2025 American League Rookie-of-the-Year voting. Anthony suffered a left oblique strain that ended his season last September 3.
Anthony was tremendous for Worcester in both 2024 (35 games) and 2025 (58 games) batting a combined .309 in those 93 games with 13 HR & 49 RBI for the WooSox. He entered the 2025 season ranked by Baseball America and MLB.com as their number 1 overall prospect.
Roman was the Gatorade Florida Player of the Year in 2022. He was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL where he led his teams to back-to-back state titles as a junior and senior. Anthony will wear his usual #19 with the WooSox and will be playing his first game(s) at Polar Park since June 8th of last year prior to his promotion to Boston the next day.
Story and IKF Remain for Now - Boston Red Sox INF Trevor Story is now 4-for-21 in 6 rehab games with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored while fellow rehabbing Red Sox INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa is 1-for-13 in his 4 rehab games with 2 walks and a run scored. Both are in the WooSox starting lineup tonight while IKF is also expected to play here in Worcester tomorrow night as well.
Kiner-Falefa has been on Boston's injured list since June 19 with left forearm inflammation that was ultimately diagnosed as a stress reaction in his left ulna bone. Story has been on the Red Sox injured list since May 15 with a sports hernia that eventually required surgery.
IKF hit .277 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, and 7 SB in 47 games for the Red Sox this season including 27 games at 2B, 16 at SS, 8 at 3B, 1 at 1B, and 1 as the DH. His last game was June 18 vs. Toronto when he went 1-for-3 with a HR. He was placed on the 10-day IL on June 20 (retro to June 19) and then transferred to the 60-day IL on August 11.
Story, 33, played in 41 games for the Red Sox this season batting .206 with 3 HR & 19 RBI. He had an excellent season in 2025 hitting .263 with 25 HR & 96 RBI in 157 games. He also tied a Major League record with 31 consecutive stolen bases before being caught in his 32nd and final attempt of the year.
Two Dozen To Go - Worcester has 24 games remaining this season (including tonight) and those are balanced evenly with 12 home and 12 road games left. After this week/weekend, the WooSox will have just one remaining homestand from September 15-20 when they end the regular season with 6-games vs. the Durham Bulls. On the year, Worcester is 34-27 at home compared to 29-31 on the road. The WooSox are bidding for their 6th winning season in this their 6th year in Worcester.
Fourth Down - After not losing two in a row during an 18-game stretch between July 22 - August 9, the WooSox have currently dropped 4 straight games for the second time in a little over a week. They need a win tonight to avoid matching their season-long 5-game losing streak from June 23-27 (all at home vs. Toledo). Their other 5-game skids came from May 19-23 (all at home vs. Rochester) and from April 14-18 (all in Nashville). They have not lost 6 straight since a 6-game losing streak from May 22-28, 2024.
What Have You Done for Me Lately - Worcester has lost 8 of their last 9 games and they are 3-10 in their last baker's dozen games following a 4-game winning streak from August 4-8. The 3-10 skid comes after the WooSox went 15-2 between July 22 - August 8. Furthermore, between June 28 and August 8, the WooSox won 24 of 30 games.
Warm & Hot Sox -
Franklin Arias Hit in 4 straight (4-for-11) with 2 2B & 2 RBI. Had a 9-game hitting streak from July 28 - August 7 that ended on August 9 (0-for-5).
