AUGUST 21st WORCESTER (27-20)/(63-55) at SYRACUSE (23-24)/(61-61) 6:35 pm
Worcester Red Sox RHP Blake Wehunt (1-1, 4.05) vs. Syracuse Mets RHP Jack Wenninger (4-7, 4.39)
Five Hole - The Worcester Red Sox - who have lost 2 of the first 3 games here in Syracuse this week (5-1 on Tuesday and 5-0 last night) - will try to even this 6-game series with the Mets at two victories apiece when they play game four tonight at 6:35 pm at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY. The WooSox - losers of 5 of their last 6 games - earned their only victory thus far this week when they overcame a 5-1 deficit and rallied for a come-from-behind, 9-7 victory on Wednesday night. At least the two Mets wins have been quick ones...the fastest 9-inning game of the season for the WooSox on Tuesday (1 hour & 59 minutes) and last night in 2:24. The Sox and Mets play the back half of this 6-set the next two nights (both at 6:35 pm) before the series and Sox roadtrip finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. Tonight's game can be heard back in New England on NASH 98.9 FM and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network.
What Have You Done for Me Lately - Worcester is 3-7 in their last 10 games following a 4-game winning streak from August 4-8. Between June 28 and August 8 the WooSox went 24-6. Despite this current skid, the Sox are still 18-8 since July 22. Losers of 2 of 3 here in Syracuse, this comes after a 5-game WooSox road winning streak from July 29 - August 2 (all in Norfolk). Worcester has also won 13 of their last 19 home games.
Story Time with IKF - Boston Red Sox INF Trevor Story did not play last night as scheduled. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored Wednesday night playing shortstop for his third game on rehab with the WooSox (he is 3-for-9 in those three games). Story has been joined in Syracuse by fellow rehabbing Red Sox infielder Isiah Kiner- Falefa who was 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored as the second baseman on Wednesday and 0-for-3 as the shortstop last night.
Story will bat second and play shortstop tonight while Kiner-Falefa is not in the WooSox starting lineup.
Kiner-Falefa has been on Boston's injured list since June 19 with left forearm inflammation that was ultimately diagnosed as a stress reaction in his left ulna bone. Story has been on the Red Sox injured list since May 15 with a sports hernia that eventually required surgery.
IKF hit .277 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, and 7 SB in 47 games for the Red Sox this season including 27 games at 2B, 16 at SS, 8 at 3B, 1 at 1B, and 1 as the DH. His last game was June 18 vs. Toronto when he went 1-for-3 with a HR. He was placed on the 10-day IL on June 20 (retro to June 19) and then transferred to the 60-day IL on August 11.
Story, 33, played in 41 games for the Red Sox this season batting .206 with 3 HR & 19 RBI. He had an excellent season in 2025 hitting .263 with 25 HR & 96 RBI in 157 games. He also tied a Major League record with 31 consecutive stolen bases before being caught in his 32nd and final attempt of the year.
All Good Things Come to an End - After a month+ of outstanding play, the WooSox have fallen into a funk going 3-7 since August 9. Their team stats during this current 10-game stretch. The WooSox are batting .245 (81-for-331) with 42 runs scored (4.7 per game). That compares to 8.1 runs per game while they won 15 of 17 (138 runs total). Sox pitchers are 3-7 with a 5.16 ERA in their last 10 games (51 ER in 89 IP). On the other hand, while winning 15 of 17 games between July 22 and August 8, Worcester's stats during that impressive stretch were outstanding. The team batted .302 (171-for-566) with the aforementioned 8.1 runs/game while Sox pitchers were 15-2 with a 3.12 ERA (52 ER in 150 IP).
Scoreboard Watching - With 27 games to go here are the latest standings in the race for the one playoff spot that comes with the best record in the 2nd half among all 20 International League clubs. Rochester, Indianapolis, and St. Paul are all tied for 1st-place overall with their 29-19 second half records. Durham (28-19) is a 1/2 game behind and Worcester (27-20) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (26-19) are both 11/2 GB of the three front-runners who are tied atop the league. The best second half record among all 20-teams in the league earns the one playoff spot that comes with that and a date with 1st half champ Memphis in a best 2 out of 3 series from September 22-24 in Tennessee. The winner of that series goes to Las Vegas to take on the Pacific Coast League champion in a one-game Triple-A National Championship Game on September 26.
