PLAYOFFS ON THE HORIZON...AT THE VERIZON?
Three things are for certain in the American Conference playoff race - Florida is the No. 1 seed, Memphis is the No. 3 seed, and the winner of this week's Louisville at Green Bay game will win the East Division and be the No. 2 seed. After that, a lot of different things can happen. All this makes for what is sure to be an interesting and exciting final week of the regular season. Louisville and Green Bay are locks to reach the playoffs regardless of the outcome of their game, but that still leaves four teams - Macon, Manchester, Quad City, W-B/Scranton - fighting for the two remaining playoff spots.
A Wolves win automatically gives Manchester a playoff birth for the second straight year. A loss complicates matters, and a playoff bid will be determined on the outcome of a couple crucial games; Macon v.s. Arkansas, and WB-Scranton v.s. Albany.
There are 32 different playoff scenarios for the Wolves with 12 of them favoring Manchester playing host for the first round of the American Conference Playoffs which would start next weekend on August 4th or 5th at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
2006 af2 PLAYOFF PICTURE: Six teams from each the American and National Conference qualify for the playoffs. The six qualifying teams in each conference consist of the two division champions and four Wild Cards, determined by best overall record. Seeding in each conference is based on overall record, with the top two seeds in each conference reserved for the division champions, regardless of record. In the First Round (August 4-6), the two division winners in each conference receive a bye. The top-seeded Wild Card team hosts the lowest-seeded Wild Card team, while the No. 2 seeded Wild Card team hosts the No. 3 seeded Wild Card team. In the Second Round (August 11-13), the division winners who had byes in the First Round host the winners from the First Round. The top seeded division champion plays the lowest seeded team advancing from the First Round, while the second-seeded division winner plays the other winner from the First Round.
The winners of the Second Round will meet for the Conference Championships on the weekend of August 18-20. For this round seeding no longer matters, meaning the team with the better overall record hosts the Conference Championship. The winners of the Conference Championships face off in the
2006 ArenaCup on August 26 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Manchester Wolves Bolster Receiving Corps
The arenafootball2 league office announced today that WR/DB Tony Stallings has been assigned to the Manchester Wolves, New Hampshire's professional arenafootball2 team.
Stallings (5-11, 200) is an af2 veteran, having spent parts of three seasons playing for the Louisville Fire. In 2005, Stallings played in six games with the Fire before signing with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL. He rushed for 51 yards and six touchdowns, while catching 11 passes for 104 yards and one score through the air. The versatile Stallings also intercepted two passes and averaged 22.5 yards on kick returns, including one for a touchdown. In 2004, Stallings rushed for 99 yards and a team-high 14 touchdowns. He hauled in 33 passes for 387 yards and five touchdowns, had an interception and racked up 630 return yards with a touchdown. In 2002, he rushed for a team-high 124 yards and nine touchdowns, while catching nine passes for 99 yards and a touchdown while gaining 797 yards in kick returns.
"Tony is a guy that has three years of af2 experience and has been very successful," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett"He's going to jump in with both feet. We're hoping he can play a small role for us Friday and then a larger role down the road if we make the playoffs."
Stallings played his college ball at the University Louisville, where he was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team as a linebacker in 1998 and rushed for a team-high 810 yards - including three 100-yard performances.
Stallings is also well known in animal circles too, as he was the winner of King of Jungle 2 in 2004, a reality show similar to Survivor that appears on Animal Planet, and owns a variety of exotic animals including a pair of pythons. As a result of winning King of the Jungle 2, Stallings hosted his own television show in Australia about koalas.
MR. WENDELL!
The arenafootball2 league office announced this week that Manchester Wolves' WR/LB Wendell Williams was named the af2 US ARMY Ironman of the Week for his performance during last Saturday's 51-50 victory over East Division rival Albany Conquest during Week 15.
Williams (5-11, 190) played what was easily his best all-around game in a Wolves uniform against the Conquest. The Greenbelt MD native caught three passes for 11 yards and one touchdown, while returning five kickoffs for 112 yards and an electrifying touchdown. On the defensive end of the ball Williams collected a career high 6.5 total tackles and a key interception.
"Wendell has gotten better every week since he's been here," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett. "He's played Wide Receiver/Defensive Back, then Wide Receiver/Linebacker, and last week he even returned kicks for the first time. The more responsibility we give me, the more he steps up."
This is the fourth time that a Wolves' player has taken home an individual weekly league award this season, and first US ARMY Ironman honor. Jamaal Perry earned the "Cutters Catch of the Week" during Week 2, while Allistair Sebastien and Brian Mance brought home the ADT Defensive Player of the Week awards for their individual efforts during Week 3 and Week 8 respectively.
After a slow start to the season which he saw limited action in the Wolves first six games, Williams has really turned it on as of late, catching 13 touchdown passes in his last six games. This year, Wendell has caught 48 passes, for 515 yards and 14 touchdowns.
In 2005, the Rhode Island graduate won an AFL championship with John Elway's Colorado Crush as part of their practice squad; however he'd love to be a part of another championship team here in Manchester.
"It would mean a lot more to win a ring here, especially with me being able to contribute more," Williams said. "With Colorado, I was mostly on the practice squad because I got there in the middle of the season. That was just a good situation I walked in on after I came in from NFL Europe. But it was unbelievable because a lot of people don't get to win one."
