July 27, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
SIEGFRIED SETS ALL-TIME WIN MARK: Spokane Head Coach CHRIS SIEGFRIED has led the Shock to the league's best record (13-2), a West Division regular season title, and a first round bye in the 2006 playoffs in the team's first season of af2 play. In the process, he has steadily climbed up the career coaching victories ladder. With his team's 69-68 home win last week, Siegfried became the af2's all-time leader in coaching victories with 53. He passed former Rio Grande Valley and Tennessee Valley Head Coach KEVIN GUY for the top spot on the af2's all-time career coaching victories list. He's also one of just three coaches in af2 history to hit the 50-win plateau. Siegfried, in his fifth season as an af2 head coach, is currently 53-26 overall. Below is a list of the top coaches in league history.

2006 ARENACUP SET FOR PUERTO RICO: The ArenaCup, the championship game of arenafootball2, has a new home, and what a beautiful home it is. The Coliseo de Puerto Rico, located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be the backdrop for the league's season ending, showcase event this season, the af2 league office announced late last week. The Coliseo, one of the newest and most state-of-the arenas in the world, will host the 2006 ArenaCup on Saturday, August 26. MB Sports, Inc., a widely recognized promotion company that was responsible for the huge success of the World Baseball Classic, is spearheading the marketing and promotion for the ArenaCup and its calendar of activities and events. MB Sports, Inc. is also the same firm that has been put in charge of putting on the upcoming NHL exhibition game at the Coliseo this fall. By teaming up with MB Sports, Inc. and the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, the af2's premier event is expected to be a huge success.
AMERICAN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF PICTURE STILL CLOUDY: Three things are for certain in the American Conference playoff race - Florida is the No. 1 seed, Memphis is the No. 3 seed, and the winner of this week's Louisville at Green Bay game will win the East Division and be the No. 3 seed. After that, a lot of different things can happen. All this makes for what is sure to be an interesting and exciting final week of the regular season. Louisville and Green Bay are locks to reach the playoffs regardless of the outcome of their game, but that still leaves four teams - Macon, Manchester, Quad City, W-B/Scranton - fighting for the two remaining playoff spots.
POSTSEASON APPEARANCES: The Tulsa Talons officially clinched their seventh straight trip to the af2 playoffs with a Week 16 win at Bossier-Shreveport. Tulsa's seven playoff appearances are the most in league history. Tennessee Valley, Quad City and Florida are tied for the second most postseason appearances in league history with five. The Talons are one of four teams (Arkansas, Birmingham, Quad City) that have been a part of the af2 since the league's inception in 2000.

RISLOV SET TO BREAK TD RECORD: Rookie QB SCOTT RISLOV of Central Valley has had an outstanding first season in the af2. With one game still to play, Rislov has already thrown for 98 touchdowns (1st in af2) and 4,105 yards (3rd in af2). He's just one touchdown shy of the af2 record of 99 touchdown passes set by MATT SAUK in 2005. The best single season total in Arena Football (AFL and af2) history is CLINT DOLEZEL's 105 touchdown tosses for the Dallas Desperados in 2006. Rislov needs seven scores this week to tie that mark, and eight to break it. Florida veteran signal caller CHRIS WALLACE ranks second in the af2 in touchdown passes this season with 93.
KICKIN' IT UP A NOTCH: Oklahoma City kicker A.J. HAGLUND has become the most accurate kicker on extra points in league history with a career average of .910 (141-155). This season he's on pace to have the best season for point after accuracy in af2 history. He's currently converting at 93.9 percent (107-114). He had his third extra point attempt blocked in the team's Week 16 win against Arkansas. That result snapped Haglund's streak of 69 consecutive point after makes without a miss. The perfect run lasted eight games. Haglund finished the game by connecting on his remaining five attempts.

ARKANSAS HOPES TO HIT SACK MARK: The Twisters lead the league in sacks with 48 on the season. They are just four sacks shy of the league record. Carolina set the current af2 standard for most sacks in a season with 52 in 2001. That year Arkansas, ironically enough, finished a close second with 51 sacks. Tulsa, with 37 sacks, ranks second in sacks this season behind the Twisters.
QUAD CITY'S TRIO PASSES ANOTHER MILESTONE: Quad City receivers KRIS PETERS, TIM DODGE, and JACK WALKER became the first team trio of receivers to record 100 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Walker leads the group with 110 catches (1,245 receiving yards), Peters has 102 (1,526) and Dodge has 100 (1,278).
MCCOLLISTER MAKIN' BIG IMPACT WITH KNIGHTS: One of Macon's newest additions, OS CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER, has been a huge factor for the Knights since his arrival six weeks ago. Acquired in a trade with Oklahoma City, the second-year player has accounted for 23 scores (22 receiving, 1 rushing) in six games. Not coincidentally, Macon has won five of those six contests, including a 81-28 win in Week 17 at home against Tennessee Valley. McCollister has accumulated 55 catches (9.2 per game) for 846 yards (141.0 per game) as the Knights feature receiver.
MAGER PLAYER: Louisville OS ROB MAGER has established himself as the most dangerous receiver in the af2 this season. He currently leads the league in scoring (316 points), receiving yards (1,832), receiving touchdowns (52) and receptions (137). He has already surpassed his own team records for a single season in all of those same categories. He's fallen back a bit from his impressive pace, but he still has a chance to set a new af2 record for most touchdown catches in a season. DONOVAN MORGAN currently owns the league-high mark with 54. Mager also still has an outside chance at the league scoring record (346) and total touchdowns mark (57), also held by Morgan.
HICKS AND VENA TO SET PASSING YARDS RECORD: Veteran quarterbacks RYAN VENA (Albany) and TIM HICKS (Quad City) are both on pace to break MATT SAUK's league record for most passing yards in one season. Sauk set the all-time mark of 4,489 yards last season with the Louisville Fire. The following is a breakdown of where Vena and Hicks stand.
PROJECTED PASSING YARDS
PLAYER, TEAM CURRENT PROJ RECORD PLAYER, TEAM YEAR
Ryan Vena, Albany 4,430 4,725 4,489 Matt Sauk, Louisville 2005
Tim Hicks, Quad City 4,289 4,575
OTHER RECORDS WITHIN REACH: Aside from the already mentioned impressive af2 records that could be broken this weekend, there are still some others that could happen as well, others that may not have been a little more under the radar. They include:
NAME CATEGORY - CURRENT STAT PREVIOUS RECORD - PLAYER (YEAR)
Brett Dietz (LOU) Pass completion percentage - 71.7 71.5 - Jay McDonagh, QCS (2001)

BENTON HOLDS af2 CAREER SCORING LEAD: Florida OS MAGIC BENTON jumped ahead of Arkansas WR/DB KEVIN WILLIAMS to become the af2's all-time scoring leader in Week 14 thanks to his two touchdowns against the Green Bay Blizzard. The veteran currently has 828 career points. Benton also has the distinction of being the first af2 player to hit the 800-point plateau. Williams joined the 800-club in Week 17 and ranks second overall with 808 points. Former Tulsa star MITCH ALLNER entered 2006 as the league's career leader with 780 points over his five-year career. Memphis' KEVIN PRENTISS became the newest member of the 700-club with an 18-point effort on three touchdowns in a Week 15 loss at Louisville. Prentiss currently ranks fifth on the all-time list with 738 points.

2006 af2 PLAYOFF PICTURE: Six teams from each the American and National Conference qualify for the playoffs. The six qualifying teams in each conference consist of the two division champions and four Wild Cards, determined by best overall record. Seeding in each conference is based on overall record, with the top two seeds in each conference reserved for the division champions, regardless of record. In the First Round (August 4-6), the two division winners in each conference receive a bye. The top-seeded Wild Card team hosts the lowest-seeded Wild Card team, while the No. 2 seeded Wild Card team hosts the No. 3 seeded Wild Card team. In the Second Round (August 11-13), the division winners who had byes in the First Round host the winners from the First Round. The top seeded division champion plays the lowest seeded team advancing from the First Round, while the second-seeded division winner plays the other winner from the First Round. The winners of the Second Round will meet for the Conference Championships on the weekend of August 18-20. For this round seeding no longer matters, meaning the team with the better overall record hosts the Conference Championship. The winners of the Conference Championships face off in the 2006 ArenaCup on August 26 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
