DALY CIY, Calif---While the rematch had been circled on calendars for over a month, penalties and early mistakes prevented the San Jose Wolves (7-2) from avenging their loss in Wyoming in April.
The Wyoming Cavalry (9-0) capitalized on fourteen penalties against the San Jose Wolves as quarterback Matt Strand threw eight touchdowns as Wyoming got the better of San Jose 80-53 at the Cow Palace Saturday night at the Cow Palace.
The Wolves defense pestered Strand and company early, only allowing Wyoming's opening score after a pair of questionable illegal defense penalties. The defense then prevented the customary two-point conversion attempt by the Cavalry.
Omar Jacobs and the offense fired back with a touchdown hauled in off of the shoestrings of Reggie Eubanks.
But Strand rallied the Cavalry offense, scoring on the next play to quickly regain the lead. The Cavalry controlled the ball for a majority of the time left in the opening half thanks to multiple penalties against the Wolves, including a crucial personal foul penalty on a fourth down, that set up one of three more Cavalry scores in the first half as Wyoming led 38-7 at the break.
San Jose looked revitalized to start the second half as Jacobs recovered from his early turnovers, spreading the ball to Samora Goodson, Jayson Boyd, and A.J. Bennett for touchdowns.
But more questionable penalties on the Wolves gave Wyoming too many chances, and Strand was just too good. Strand completed 22 of 38 passes for 233 yards spreading the ball between his favorite targets. Dante Dudley caught nine passes for 125 yards and four touchdowns while Jasonus Tillery caught six passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
As good as Strand and the Cavalry offense were, they benefitted greatly from the excessive penalties called on San Jose. The Wolves came into the game as the most penalized team in the league by 37 yards a game and added to it. Fourteen penalties for 69 yards forced the defense into making repeated stops and Strand just did not allow that.
"We just didn't execute tonight," said Wolves' GM/Head Coach Bennie King. "Some of those penalties really killed us, but we didn't cover anybody and they did their thing."
Jacobs finished the game 14-21 for 276 yards as the Wolves offense seemed to be in rhythm, especially in the second half. He threw for five touchdowns and ran in two others, while Boyd led the way receiving with four catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Bennett, Eubanks, and Goodson each added a touchdown catch.
The Wolves have a bye next Saturday before traveling to Wenatchee Valley to see the Venom for the third time in five games on June 4th.
