Manchester Wolves News Release
The arenafootball2 league office announced that the Manchester Wolves, New Hampshire's professional af2 team, have been assigned defensive back and two-year veteran Deon Giddens.
Giddens (5'10,185) comes to the Wolves after playing two seasons (2005-2006) and winning an af2 Championship (2005) with the now defunct Memphis Xplorers. In 36 career games the Tennessee native collected a total of 160.5 total tackles, two sacks, nine interceptions, 54 pass breakups and five forced fumbles defensively. On offense Giddens hauled in 39 passes for 389 yards and six touchdowns, while rushing for one touchdown.
"We're hoping that we've healed a wound in our secondary that has hurt us all year with the signing of Deon," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett. "The middle defensive back spot is the toughest to play in Arena Football, and now we have a player with both experience AND talent. I'm excited about what he can do, I just hope he stays healthy."
During his senior season at Tennessee State in 2003 Giddens recorded 52 tackles, four interceptions, six pass deflections and recovered one fumble which earned him a Second Team All Ohio Valley Conference selection. Giddens was selected to the All Ohio Valley Conference First Team during his junior season after leading his team with 65 solo tackles, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.
Prior to the addition of Giddens, the Wolves have plugged in two-year veteran David Bailey, Shawn Murray who is on team suspension and the now released rookie Matt Castillo for that middle spot on defense. Bailey, a natural wide receiver from the University of New Hampshire, filled in admirably in eight games for Manchester as the Yonkers, NY native currently is second on the team in tackles with 47.0, leads the team in pass deflections with seven and is tied for second on the team with two interceptions. The addition of Giddens should allow Bailey to move back into the offensive rotation where he has 18 receptions for 268 yards and three touchdowns in limited play.
The Wolves (4-5) will take on their East Division Rival Albany Conquest (3-5) this Friday, June 8, at 7:05pm on Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. Everyone through the door will receive a FREE "Not Your Typical Team Photo" presented by Citizens Bank, fans will also be treated to a special halftime performance by the "Fly Ball Demo Team."
