Wisconsin Wolfpack News Release
(MADISON) - The Wisconsin Wolfpack (1-0) narrowly defeated the Miami Valley SIlverbacks (0-2), 38-32, Saturday night at the Hartmeyer Arena in Madison, Wis., in Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) action. Wolfpack running back Eric Donoval did the most damage in the victory rushing for three touchdowns.
The Wolfpack scored on their opening possession when quarterback Brian Ryczkowski threw a pass to the left corner of the end zone that receiver Marcus Lewis came up with. The extra-point attempt hit the ceiling of the arena before going through the uprights, making it no good, but the Wolfpack led 6-0 with 10:45 to play in the first quarter.
The Wolfpack struck again over ten minutes later when Ryczkowski bought time in the pocket and threw a bullet to receiver Marques Johnson in the end zone. The two-point attempt failed and the Wolfpack led 12-0.
The second quarter was quiet until the final seconds. The SIlverbacks scored their first points of the game on an 18-yard pass play from quarterback Eric Morton to running back Derrick Moss. The touchdown was setup by an interception and 17-yard return by Chris Davis. Morton failed to run the ball into the end zone on the two-point try, but the Wolfpack lead was cut in half, 12-6.
Former Wisconsin Badger Josh Nettles returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to the Silverback's one-yard line. Donoval took the ball in for the first of his three touchdowns. His two-point conversion attempt was no good, giving the Wolfpack an 18-6 lead heading into halftime.
The Silverbacks seemed to get a second wind to start the second half, striking first on a 14-yard pass from Morton to Moss, the second time they connected in the game. Morton's two-point conversion run came up short and the Wolfpack led 18-12 with 9:49 to play.
The Wolfpack responded on the ensuing drive on Donoval's second touchdown run. Tony Smidle's kick was good and the Wolfpack lef 25-12 with 7:45 to play in the quarter.
The Silverbacks struck right back when receiver Kyenes Mincy ripped the ball away from Wolfpack defensive back Quincy Hudson on fourth-and-11. The Morton kick was blocked, but the Silverbacks pulled to within seven heading into the fourth quarter.
On the next Silverbacks drive, Nettles intercpeted a Morton pass and was ruled down inside the one-yard line. Silverbacks lineman Aubrey Huff got penetration into the backfield and sacked Ryczkowski for a safety, narrowing the Wolfpack lead to 25-20 with 14:50 to play in the game.
The Silverbacks took their first lead of the game just two minutes later on a pass from Morton to receiver Daniel Stover. The Moss two-point conversion run failed but the Silverbacks led 26-25.
The Wolfpack stopped the bleeding with 11:10 to play on Donoval's third touchdown run of the game, again from one-yard out, giving the Wolfpack a 31-26 lead.
The Wolfpack expanded their lead when Shane Adler, who replaced Ryczkowski after te safety, found receiver Calvin Thomas for a three-yard touchdown pass. Smidl added the point-after and gave the Wolfpack a 38-26 lead with 8:25 to play.
The Silverbacks would close out the scoring when Morton sliced through the middle of the Wolfpack defense for a 19-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion pass failed, providing the final score of 38-32.
