Wolfpack Battle for CIFL Championship Saturday
June 23, 2010 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
Wisconsin Wolfpack News Release
(MADISON) - The Wisconsin Wolfpack (9-2) and Cincinnati Commandos (10-1) look to settle some unfinished business in the Continental Indoor Football League championship game Saturday night at the Cincinnati Gardens at 7 p.m. CT. The teams split their regular season series wih each team winning at home against an opponent that wasn't at full strength.
In the first matchup in Cincinnati on April 10, a 48-26 Commandos victory, the Wolfpack had just lost starting quarterback Brian Ryczkowski for the season. Dan Roberts filled in and played well in his first indoor start. The Wolfpack were also without starting linebackers James Kamoku and Derek Brown and were thin in the defensive backfield as well.
The second matchup at the Hartmeyer Arena on May 29 saw the Commandos rest many of their key starters including quarterback Ben Mauk, wide receiver Robert Redd, and linebacker James Spikes. The Commandos had an opportunity to complete a perfect regular season but they fell short, losing 45-21.
There will be no excuses Saturday night as the top two teams in most statistical categories in the CIFL battle it out for the CIFL Championship. The Wolfpack now have former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Matt Schabert at the helm. They also acquired some late-season talent from the Chicago Cardinals, including one of the top total yardage players in the CIFL, Brandon Wogoman, one of the elite linebackers in the league in Jim Cichon, and an upper-tier offensive lineman in Matt Rahn.
Everyone likes the prospects of playing in the more spacious Cincinnati Gardens.
"It will definitely open the game up for us," said Schabert. "I'm looking forward to seeing what our offense can do with more space."
The game begins at 7 p.m. CT and will be carried on the CIFL Radio Network through the Wisconsin Wolfpack website at http://www.wiwolfpack.com/indoor. Don Wadewitz and Dan Pfeifer will call the action.
