Western New York Flash News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kans. - The WNY Flash battled to a 1-0 over two-time consecutive NWSL Champion FC Kansas City 1-0. Sam Mewis scored the game-winner by converting a penalty in the 72th minute after an unfortunate handball by FC Kansas City and U.S. Women's National Team captain Becky Sauerbrunn.
The Flash, who finished seventh in last year's league standings, edged the hosts in shots 18-11 with a lot of speed and pressure from up top with plenty of chances for forward Jess McDonald. Goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo managed to stay strong in the back making a great save in stoppage time to keep the Blues from pulling level, but Flash defender Elizabeth Eddy conceded a foul in the box. FC Kansas City and World Cup champion Heather O'Reilly took the kick, but failed to produce as her shot hit the post, keeping the Flash ahead.
The Western New York Flash are back in action on the road Saturday, April 23, when they take on the Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, at 8 p.m. ET.
