WNBA celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

February 6, 2007 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) News Release


New York, Feb. 6, 2007 - The Women's National Basketball Association, its players, coaches and teams will celebrate the 21st Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) through the month of February. Beginning February 8, fitness clinics and workshops will be conducted in WNBA markets to help lead, inspire and create positive change in the lives of women and young people.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day, first chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, honors female athletic achievement and recognizes the positive influence of sports participation for girls and women.

Below is a list of WNBA events taking place in support of NGWSD:

New York

Connecticut Sun star Nykesha Sales will join WNBA legend and currently the league's Director of Player Personnel, Carla McGhee in hosting a special Jr. WNBA basketball clinic on February 8 for young girls at the W. Tresper Clarke High School in Westbury, NY. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the players and learn strength, endurance and flexibility techniques that offer them ways to improve their body, mind and athletic performance.

New York Liberty legend Kym Hampton will participate in a special celebration of fitness and nutrition for women and young girls when she takes part in the City of New York Parks & Recreation's "A Girl Power Celebration" which is set to take place at the Hansborough Recreation Center in NY on February 24.

Chicago

The Chicago Sky's Amanda Lassiter and Head Coach Bo Overton will host a Girls Basketball Clinic for young girls in the Chicago area. The clinic will take place at the Northwestern University Fieldhouse before the Northwestern University vs. Penn State women's basketball game on February 11.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles Sparks star Temeka Johnson will participate in a special basketball clinic hosted by the City of Walnut, CA at the Walnut Gymnasium on February 9. Johnson will interact with young fans, shoot hoops and sign autographs.

Indianapolis

The Indiana Fever co-hosted a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) luncheon on February 1 to commemorate 2007 National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Conducted at Conseco Fieldhouse, this was the eighth consecutive year that the Fever welcomed the event.

Seattle

The Seattle Storm is holding their second annual Women in Sports Essay Contest in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Students in grades 4-8 are invited to submit a one-page essay that answers the following question: Why is it important to celebrate women's athletics?

The winning essays will be selected by Storm forward Wendy Palmer and winners will receive one or more of the following prizes: pregame recognition at the Friday, May 11 Storm game; tickets to select Storm games; a personalized Storm jersey; gift certificate to the Sonics & Storm Team Shop; and a visit by Storm forward Wendy Palmer to their school on May 10.
