WNBA announces first round playoff schedule

NEW YORK, Aug. 16, 2007 - With teams having secured seven of the eight spots in the 2007 WNBA Playoffs, the league today announced the schedule of first round games for the Eastern Conference. The postseason will begin on Thursday, Aug. 23.
The Detroit Shock has clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference and home court advantage throughout the playoffs by virtue of the league's best record. The Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun also have clinched berths, while the Washington Mystics and New York Liberty are battling for the fourth and final spot in the East.
In the Western Conference, a battle for the top seed could go down to the final day of the regular season and involve multiple tie-breaker scenarios. With the Phoenix Mercury and San Antonio Silver Stars vying for the No. 1 spot, the Mercury and Monarchs will face off in a home-and-home series this weekend while San Antonio takes on Indiana and Minnesota. The Seattle Storm is locked in as the No. 4 seed.
Detroit will tip off its series against the fourth seed with a road game on Friday, Aug. 24, on NBA TV. Game 2 will be played in Detroit on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised on ABC. Game 3, if necessary, will be at Detroit on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Detroit will face either Washington or New York.
Also in the East, Indiana and Connecticut will face each other in round one. The sites of the games will be determined by the seeds. Results of games played this week will determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in that series.
