Wizards Take Down Burn, 3-1

SOUTHLAKE, TX - The Kansas City Wizards upended the Dallas Burn 3-1 Saturday evening at Dragon Stadium, taking the team's first road win of the season. Forward Eric Quill and midfielder Chris Brown each recorded a goal and an assist on the night, and Dallas forward Jason Kreis notched the Burn's only goal.
Kansas City took a 2-0 lead in the first half of play, notching two goals in three minutes. The Wizards grabbed the first tally in the 12th minute, when midfielder Francisco Gomez spotted Eric Quill making a run upfield. Lofting the ball over the Dallas defense, Gomez dropped the ball inside the box, right into the path of the streaking Quill. Heading the ball down, Quill rang a right-footed shot off the underside of the crossbar for the opening goal.
In the 15th minute, Kansas City doubled the lead on the strength of a Chris Brown goal. Quill started the play by sending the cross to Brown from the left flank, catching the Wizards forward inside the six-yard box. Brown chested the ball to his feet, putting the point-blank shot past a helpless D.J. Countess.
The Wizards came within of inches to expanding the lead in the 37th minute, when an opportunistic Dario Fabbro chipped a 58-yard shot, looking to catch Countess off of his line. Countess was able to track back in time, however, getting enough of the ball to tip it over the bar.
Dallas cut the lead in half in the 53rd minute, as forward Jason Kreis notched his second goal of the 2003 season. Midfielder Chad Deering sent the long ball over the Kansas City defense, picking out the advancing Paul Broome just inside the penalty area. Broome cut the ball back to a looming Kreis, who ripped off a 13-yard shot past goalkeeper Tony Meola.
Ten minutes later, Broome's left-footed volley hit the near post, coming close to equalizing the affair.
Instead, Kansas City reaffirmed the advantage in the 66th minute, scoring an insurance goal against the run of play. Brown laid the ball down the right side to an overlapping Chris Klein, who snuck behind the Dallas defense to get a one-on-one run with an exposed Countess. Countess came off of his line to cut down the shooting angle, but Klein's shot beat him to the near post, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Wizards.
Brown continued his domination of the right flank late into the game, hitting the crossbar again in the 88th minute. Springing free down the right, Brown carried the ball to the corner of the 19-yard box, unleashing a wicked blast that beat Countess before clanging off of the bar. As the final whistle blew, however,
Dallas (0-2-2, 2 points) remains winless in the 2003 campaign. The Burn take on the Los Angeles Galaxy (0-2-3, 3 points) at Dragon Stadium on Saturday, May 17th. Kansas City (2-1-2, 8 points) is called back into action on Wednesday, May 14th, when the Wizards play host to the New England Revolution (2-2-1, 7 points) at Gillette Stadium.
