Wizards' Owens named CBA Coach of the Month

Boise, ID (March 14, 2005) â The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Dakota Wizards Head Coach Casey Owens was named the League Coach of the Month for the months of February and March. The award is the second monthly coaching honor this year for Owens, who is in his first season as a head coach in the CBA.
For the month, the New Mexico State University alum led the Wizards to a 13-5 record (7-0 at home, 6-5 on the road), and a 4.3 quarter-point average, capturing 78 of a total 126 possible quarter-points. The Wizards finished the regular season with the best overall record in the league (32-16), and earned the league's highest quarter-point total (197.5) en route to clinching the Western Conference regular season title and home-court advantage throughout the 2005 CBA Playoffs.
Owens has also produced three CBA-to-NBA call-ups this season, as guard Billy Thomas signed with the New Jersey Nets on January 21, while guard Maurice Baker signed two different 10-day contracts, first with the Los Angeles Clippers on February 22, and then with the Portland Trail Blazers on March 12.
Before being named Head Coach of the Wizards, Owens spent the previous three seasons as the team's Assistant Coach and Director of Player Personnel under then head coach Dave Joerger. As the assistant, he helped lead the Wizards to two CBA Titles (2002, 2004), landed back-to-back CBA MVP's in Miles Simon (2001-02) and Andy Panko (2002-03), and boasted a league-high seven CBA-to-NBA call-ups during the 2003-04 season.
Other coaches receiving consideration for February/March Coach of the Month honors were the Sioux Falls Skyforce's Dave Joerger (4.1 quarter-point average, 12-5 record), the Great Lakes Storm's Russ Bergman (3.5 quarter-point average, 8-8 record), and the Rockford Lightning's Chris Daleo (3.8 quarter-point average, 9-8 record).
