The Portland Winterhawks (22-7-0-3) fell 4-3 in Spokane against the Chiefs (14-9-2-2) Saturday night.

The Chiefs opened the scoring 7:15 into the game when Steven Kuhn scored on a power play to give Spokane a 1-0 lead. Spokane scored again 39 seconds later, as Matt Marantz put one past Winterhawks netminder Mac Carruth to make it 2-0. The Winterhawks got one back before the end of the period when Sven Bartschi scored his 19th goal of the season with just 51 seconds left to make it 2-1 going into the second period.

At the 8:38 mark of the second period Kuhn scored his second of the night for the Chiefs to make it 3-1. Portland once again got back to within one when Nino Niederreiter scored his 11th goal of the season at the 12:58 mark to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Spokane again established a two-goal lead when Brady Brassart scored at the 16:54 mark to make it 4-2 in favor of the Chiefs.

Late in the third period with goaltender Mac Carruth on the bench for an extra attacker, the Winterhawks got one more with 6.4 seconds to go on a goal by Brad Ross, but that would be as close as Portland would get.

Mac Carruth was in net for Portland, stopping 45 of 49 shots. James Reid picked up the win in net for Spokane, stopping 26 of 29 shots.

The two teams meet again Wednesday night, once again in Spokane.
