Published on November 5, 2018 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Joachim Blichfeld of the Portland Winterhawks has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending November 4, 2018.
Blichfeld, who was selected in the seventh round, 210th overall, by the San Jose Sharks at the 2016 NHL Draft, recorded nine points (4G-5A) and a plus two rating in three games as the Winterhawks won all three of their contests this weekend, remaining in hot pursuit of the top spot in the U.S. Division.
On both Friday and Saturday, Blichfeld played a strong role in Portland's victories over the visiting Victoria Royals. In Friday's 7-3 win, Blichfeld scored Portland's fifth goal of the contest and picked up an assist. He was named the third star of the game for his efforts.
A day later, the Winterhawks won by a tighter 2-1 score, with Blichfeld again scoring once and adding an assist. After picking up an assist on Portland's opening goal of the game, Blichfeld scored the game-winning goal. He was again named the third star of the contest.
In Sunday's weekend finale, Blichfeld recorded the second five-point game of his WHL career, potting a pair of goals and adding three assists in a wild 8-6 victory for the Winterhawks on the road against the Spokane Chiefs. Blichfeld scored Portland's fifth and eighth goals of the contest, the latter of which went into the empty net. He also assisted on Portland's fourth, sixth, and seventh goals of the contest. Blichfeld was named the WHL's first star of the night for his impressive performance.
The productive week gives Blichfeld 35 points (14G-21A) in 17 games this season, including six power-play goals, one short-handed goal and one game-winning goal. Blichfeld ranks third in WHL scoring and is the top-scoring import player among those in the WHL.
Originally selected in the second round, 85th overall, of the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the 6-foot-1, 188-pound forward is a product of Frederikshavn, Denmark. Blichfeld has now appeared in 136 WHL regular season games, recording 149 points (66G-83A), including 21 power-play goals, two short-handed goals, and 10 game-winning goals. The 20-year-old has also recorded 19 points (8G-11A) in 23 WHL playoff games with the Winterhawks, including a pair of power-play goals and one game-winning goal.
The Winterhawks are back in action Saturday, November 10 (6:00 p.m. PT) when they welcome the Kelowna Rockets to the Moda Centre.
