July 26, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks today announced plans for the 2023 Neely Cup Training Camp, which will take place from August 29 to September 3 inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Neely Cup, an annual event in which the team's players and prospects report to Portland for fitness testing, on-ice sessions and intra-squad games, will be the first opportunity for fans to see players vie for spots on the 2023-24 roster. The Neely Cup will be open to the public beginning Thursday, August 31.
The Winterhawks will name the 2023 Neely Cup teams after the four members who were inducted into the Winterhawks Hall of Fame last spring - Randy Heath, Cam Neely, Grant Sasser, and Ken Yaremchuk. The next wave of Hall of Fame players could very well be putting on the Winterhawks jersey during camp, just like the Hall of Fame inductees in the 80's.
Yaremchuk (3rd, 424 pts.) and Heath (8th, 340 pts.) currently sit inside the top-ten in Winterhawks all-time scoring and Sasser (274 pts.) ranks second in scoring among U.S.-born players. Neely, the first and only Winterhawk to have his jersey number retired by the club, boasted impressive numbers during his season and a half of junior hockey in the Pacific Northwest. Neely posted 146 points in 91 regular season games and scored a team-high five goals during the 1983 Memorial Cup.
All four players helped the Winterhawks win the 1983 Memorial Cup on home ice.
DID YOU KNOW?: This year's training camp is also a flash from the past. Team Yaremchuk previously claimed the 2012 Neely Cup, upending Team Heath in the championship game.
