Winter Banquet Update

January 6, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (January 6, 2010) - With the season's bone-chilling temperatures and hair-raising driving conditions taking effect, Opening Day seems as tangible as a Mojave mirage. However, the 7th Annual Burlington Bees/Friends of Community Field Winter Banquet is less than two weeks away from providing a night of respite from your winter worries.

A couple of the event's annual highlights, the silent and live auctions, will feature a slew of exciting collectibles for Bees fans of all ages. In addition to autographed items from Albert Pujols and Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg, Bob Gibson, and Fergie Jenkins, a pair of signed jerseys from 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke and the night's keynote speaker Bill Buckner will be two of the marquee attractions.

Greinke received 25 of 28 first-place votes for the award after posting a major league-best 2.16 ERA with 242 strikeouts in 229.1 innings in 2009. The 26-year old right-hander won 16 games despite playing for a Royals team that won only 65 overall. Buckner, a 22-year major league veteran, ripped 2,715 career hits as a member of the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Angels, and Royals. He joins Al Hrabosky and Lee Smith among former MLB stars who have appeared at the Winter Banquet in recent years.

Joining Buckner onstage will be former Bees radio broadcaster Randy Wehofer, who returns to Burlington to serve as the Winter Banquet's master of ceremonies for the first time since joining the Triple-A Iowa Cubs' radio team in 2008. While with the Bees, Wehofer served as the team's radio voice for nine seasons and assistant general manager of baseball operations for five. He made his big-screen debut in last year's feature film "Sugar," portraying radio broadcaster Jack Jeffries of the fictional Bridgetown Swing.

Tickets for the fundraiser, to be held once again this year at the PZAZZ! Convention & Events Center, are $50 each or $350 for a table of eight. The festivities start with a cocktail hour and the opening of the silent auction at 6:00 p.m. A full dinner will be served buffet-style starting at 7:00. Buckner will not only address those in attendance, but leave time for a question and answer session as well. The evening will wrap up at approximately 9:30 after the conclusion of the live auction.
