Wings lose second straight to Blazers

BOSTON, MA - The Philadelphia Wings lost their second game in a row to the Boston Blazers on Saturday night 11-7. Early penalties cost Philadelphia and Boston took an early 5 goal lead which they did not relinquish. Mat Giles who had three goals and one assist was the Wings leading scorer. The Blazers top goal scoring was Matt Lyons who managed five tallies, but it was Dan Dawson who led the team in points with eight (1G, 7A). The Wings next game is on Friday, February 6 at 8 p.m. when the defending NLL Champion Buffalo Bandits will visit the Wachovia Center.

"We took some penalties to start the game and we got down early," said Head Coach Dave Huntley. "I thought we played well on both sides of the ball to start the second half, but Boston did a good job playing with their lead." Penalties were the downfall of the Wings in the first quarter. Philadelphia took five penalties resulting in three goals by Boston. The Blazers' Matt Lyons scored three times in the opening period to help Boston to a 5-0 lead.

After taking two penalties in the first quarter, the Wings' Geoff Snider gave Philadelphia its first and only goal in the half. Boston added yet another powerplay goal, their fourth of the game, to retain their five goal lead. The score at the half was 6-1 in favor of the Blazers.

The Wings showed their first offensive burst of the game to start the second half scoring two consecutive goals, but the Blazers put in two of their own in response, including the fourth goal of the night for Boston's Matt Lyons. The Blazers continued to take penalties in the third quarter, five in total, to allow the Wings to inch closer in the game. Two more goals by the Wings brought the score to 8-5 at the end of three.

Philadelphia once again started fast in the fourth with two more goals, from Mat Giles and David Mitchell, to pull within one of the Blazers, but that would be as close as they would come on the evening. Boston's standout rookie Daryl Veltman, who had four goals on Friday night in Philadelphia, added two goals to put away the Wings. Boston would add any empty net goal to make the final 11-7 Boston Blazers.

The Wings will play their next game on February 6 at 8 p.m. when they take on the defending NLL Champion Buffalo Bandits on Dollar Dog Night at the Wachovia Center.
