Wings Look for Third Win in Trip to Rochester
December 13, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Wichita Wings News Release
Wichita, KS--The Wichita Wings (2-5) will head east this Saturday, December 15, to take on the Rochester Lancers (4-4) in the Blue Cross Arena at noon (CST). Last season, the Lancers proved to be a tough opponent for the Wings, winning the season series 3-1. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs this season.
Wichita returns to the east coast after two tough games last weekend. On Friday, December 7, Wichita lost a hard fought game to the undefeated Baltimore Blast (8-0), who currently top MISL standings. The Wings accumulated goals from three different players and trailed by two with four minutes left, following a goal from team captain Freddy Moojen, before ultimately losing to Baltimore 10-6.
The following night in Syracuse, Wichita earned their second victory of the season in overtime. The Wings went up 5-0 to start against Syracuse in the first quarter. The Silver Knights rallied, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 lead over the Wings. In the fourth quarter, Wings newcomer Matt Clare, traded from Syracuse, would bury his second three point goal of the night to tie the game with just 1:25 left. Clare's goal sent the clubs into overtime for the second time this season. Seven minutes into overtime, Wings Defender Victor Quiroz came up huge by chasing down a Syracuse fast break and making a beautiful sliding block. Quiroz's hustle was rewarded as he assisted Geison on the Wings game-winning goal just seconds later to make the final score 12-10. Both of Wichita's wins this season have come in overtime against Syracuse.
The Lancers are returning home from a three game road trip and coming off a loss to the reigning MISL champion Milwaukee Wave. In that match, Rochester Forward and MISL leading scorer, Doug Miller, scored two goals but the Lancers could not overcome a three point barrage from Milwaukee in the first half. The Wave tallied 11 points in the first half and cruised to a 13-6 win over the Lancers.
Key Matchup: Miller and Salles vs. Wings Defense
The Wings are facing a tough matchup against Rochester forwards Doug Miller and Mauricio Salles. Miller (37 points) and Salles (30 points) are currently ranked first and third in the MISL for points scored on the season. Miller leads the league in goals scored while Salles is tied for the lead in assists. Wichita looks to build off two solid defensive performances in Baltimore and Syracuse led by defenders Victor Quiroz, Chris Lemons and Kevin Ten Eyck.
Players to Watch: Matt Clare and Geison
Clare and Geison were pivotal in Wichita's 12-10 win over Syracuse. Both players scored two goals apiece, with both of Clare's coming from three point range. The Wings are building a formidable attack and have an opportunity to convert more scoring opportunities against Rochester's defense which ranks last in the MISL, allowing more than 15 points a game.
