Wings Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with 4-3 Victory over Rival Pilots

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Red Wings used RBI's from Langston Livingston (St. Joseph's (Pa.)) and Jesse Hall (LB Wallace College) and a strong outing from starting pitcher Jameson Moran (RIT) to take a 4-3 victory over the visiting Newark Pilots on Sunday afternoon. Tanner Murray (UC Davis) led Geneva with two hits and a run scored and closer Joey Haas (U of Delaware) got the save as the Wings pushed their record to 19-21 and keeping pace in the playoff hunt.

The Wings took the lead early in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Tanner Murray hit an RBI single scoring second baseman Jesse Hall. Murray's 18th hit and 10th RBI of the season gave the Red Wings the 1-0 lead going into the second inning.

The Pilots would answer back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Center Fielder Parker Tadlock hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score shortstop Nick Kent, tying the game 1-1.

Geneva would take the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth inning when right fielder Trustin Riley (Tampa U) hit a two out RBI single to score left fielder Langston Livingston, giving the Wings a 2-1 lead.

The Wings would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Murray scored from first base off a single center fielder Jack Harris (San Francisco State) and an error from the Pilot's left fielder. Geneva starting pitcher would go five innings allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh inning Newark was able to tie the game up at 3 when third baseman Matt Cerfolio hit a two run home right to right field on the seventh pitch of the at bat.

The Wings would once again take the lead back in the bottom of the inning when Harris hit a sacrifice fly to left center field, scoring Hall and moving the score to 4-3. Reliever Chase Gearing (Saginaw Valley State) would replace Brett Super (Pomona Pitzer College) in the top of the eighth inning, Super went two innings allowing two runs on two hits and two strikeouts.

Newark starting pitcher Ryan Winn went seven innings allowing four runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Gearing would go on to pitch one inning for the Red Wings allowing no runs on one hit.

Red Wings closer Joey Haas would shut out the side in the top of the ninth inning for his third save of the season, giving the Wings the 4-3 win.

With the win, the Red Wings move to 19-21 on the season while Newark falls to 13-23. Geneva will be back in action at McDonough Park on Tuesday July 24th when they take on the Glens Falls Dragons, first pitch at 7:05.
