Wings Fall Short in Portland

Philadelphia Wings News Release

PORTLAND, OR - The Wings (4-6) gave up the first five goals to the Lumberjax (5-3) and were unable to make up for their slow start. The Philadelphia duo of Merrick Thomson and Kyle Wailes both had three goals and two assists but it was not enough to defeat Portland.

"They came out fast in the first quarter and that was the difference tonight," said Head Coach Dave Huntley.

Philadelphia was shutout in the first quarter of play. Portland started the scoring one minute into the game and would add four more goals in the opening period which prompted the Wings to replace starting goaltender Brandon Miller with veteran backup Rob Blasdell. Wailes got the Wings going 30 seconds into the second quarter with their first goal of the game. Philadelphia added three more goals and cut the Lumberjax lead to 7-4 at halftime.

Wailes and Thomson continued to pull the Wings closer in the third quarter. Wailes scored his third goal of the night on a powerplay and Thomson added two goals of his own. Mat Giles scored the fourth goal of the period for the Wings which got his team within one, but that would be the closest the Wings would come to overtaking the Lumberjax. Portland's three fourth quarter goals were enough to give them the 12-10 victory and hand the Wings their sixth loss of the season.
