Aberdeen Wings News Release
Wednesday January 13th Aberdeen 3 @ Brookings 2 (OT) - Matt Pulver scored late in overtime to give the Aberdeen Wings a 3-2 road win in Brookings in the lone NAHL game on Wednesday night.
Brookings took a 1-0 lead midway through the 1st period as Garrett Elmore skated the puck into the zone. His pass back to the point found defenseman TJ Samec, who let a wrist shot go. Elmore got back in front of the net to redirect the puck past Wings goalie Peter Thome to give the Blizzard a 1-0 lead. With just seconds remaining in the 1st period, the Wings tied the game as some nice passing and cycling in the Blizzard end led to a give-and-go play with Matt Pulver to Kevin Fitzgerald, who slipped a shot underneath Brookings goalie Jacob Gwillim to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 2nd period, the Wings grabbed their first lead of the game as late in the frame, Fitzgerald scored his second goal of the game. After a face-off win by Matt Pulver, a nice play by Andrew Noel got the puck in the zone. Noel skated around the outside and drew everyone to him and then slipped a pass in front to Fitzgerald, who buried it into the net just before it came off its pegs for a 2-1 lead.
Early in the 3rd period, the Blizzard tied the game as a face-off win in the Wings zone led to a shot from the point, which was redirected in front by Griff Jeszka, who had his first chance denied by Thome, but was left open for the rebound chance.
In the overtime, some nice cycling in the Blizzard zone by the Wings, eventually got the puck to Pulver, who fired a wrist shot from the high slot through traffic and past a screened Gwillim for the overtime-winner. Pulver finished with a goal and two assists on the night, while Fitzgerald scored twice.
Thome picked up his 8th win of the year, making 22 saves, while Gwillim's record with the Blizzard fell to 1-0-2 with 19 saves.
