The Tulsa Talons advanced to the National Conference Finals with a 49-28 win against South Georgia Saturday night at Dodge Field. With the victory, the Talons will now host Bossier-Shreveport next Saturday, Aug. 18 in the National Conference Championship game.
The first quarter was an adrenaline filled offensive battle between the two teams. The Wildcats Chavis McCollister had a quick 1-yard run putting the first points on the board. The Talons answered back with a 3-yard run by Jamar Ransom, but it didn't take long for the Wildcats to regain the lead. Tavaris Capers caught a 3-yard TD pass from QB D. Bryant, making the score 14-7. Talons tied the score after Andre Forde caught a 13-yard TD pass from QB Justin Allgood, to end the quarter at 14-14.
The two teams continued to trade off scores in the second half. Tulsa's Odie Armstrong scored first with a 2-yard run, but not to be outdone, the Wildcats James Robinson caught a 35-yard TD pass to settle the score 21-21. Tulsa lead going into the half after U.S. Army Ironman, Jeff Hughley caught a 5-yard TD pass from Allgood, 21-28.
Wildcats leading receiver, McCollister, tied it back up after catching a 10-yard TD pass from Bryant, Tulsa answered with 50 seconds on the board with an Armstrong 2 Yd run, ending the third quarter with a 35-28 lead.
The fourth quarter secured the Talons spot in the National Conference final, it's the third time in five years that the Talons have made it this far. Tulsa's Jermaine Landrum ran for four yards to up the score 42-28, and Hughley helped wrap up the win with a 7-yard TD reception from Allgood. The win marks the Talons 16th for the season, tying the team record for most wins in a season, including playoffs.
