San Jose Giants News Release
The Giants bid for a series sweep of Lancaster fell short on Monday afternoon as San Jose dropped a 7-2 decision at Excite Ballpark. The JetHawks blasted a pair of homers on their way to building a 6-0 lead before cruising to the win. The defeat snapped the Giants' winning streak at four games.
Jake Wong started on the mound for San Jose and allowed a single run in the top of the first as Lancaster took an early lead. Matt Hearn led off the game with a double down the right field line and scored two batters later on a Sean Bouchard one-out single. Wong then settled in and fired back-to-back scoreless innings to keep the deficit at 1-0. The Giants right-hander had retired eight of the last nine JetHawks hitters that came to the plate before Casey Golden led off the top of the fourth with a towering solo homer to left. The home run was Golden's second of the series and 15th this year.
The top of the fifth was then a pivotal half-inning in the contest. With a runner on first and two outs, Wong induced Golden to hit a seemingly routine grounder to shortstop. However, Manuel Geraldo's throw to first was late as the hustling Golden made it in safely for an infield hit. The play would prove critical as Travis Snyder followed by launched a 416-foot home run to deep center. The three-run blast, Snyder's third round-tripper of the series, stretched the Lancaster lead to 5-0.
The JetHawks added another run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-0 before the Giants finally broke through against Lancaster starter Will Gaddis in the bottom of the frame. A one-out single from Geraldo started the rally before Heliot Ramos stepped to the plate and hammered an RBI double to deep right center. Ramos though was thrown out at third as he attempted to stretch the hit into a triple.
San Jose added another run in the bottom of the seventh and would bring the potential tying run to the plate with two outs, but could not get any closer. Consecutive singles from Courtney Hawkins and Sandro Fabian started the inning before Dalton Combs grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. Kyle McPherson's two-out infield single then brought home Hawkins to trim the JetHawks lead to 6-2. Back-to-back walks to Fabian Pena and Logan Baldwin followed to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate, however Geraldo struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
Lancaster then got the run back in the top of the eighth on a Hearn two-out RBI single for a 7-2 cushion before closing out the Giants to avoid the sweep.
