Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC hosted their Major League Soccer affiliate Toronto FC in a friendly match on Wednesday night at Legion Stadium. Toronto's Dwayne De Rosario and Janeil Hoilett tallied one goal each, while Hammerheads trainee Marc Godelman decreased the deficit 2-1 overall.
The affiliation partnership between the teams allows the Hammerheads to receive players on loan from Toronto. Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, midfielder Manu Aparicio and forward Jordan Hamilton are all currently on loan in Wilmington. Midfielder Daniel Lovitz started the regular season on loan with the team, but was recently recalled for MLS play.
Although Aparicio and Hamilton regularly don Hammerheads blue, the were listed on tonight's friendly match roster for Toronto.
Rosario had the first goal of the night for Toronto in the 20th minute after a Wilmington handball resulted in penalty kick. Moments later Hammerheads defender Ashani Fairclough prevented a midfield breakaway from Hamilton to refuse any potential opportunities on goal in Wilmington territory. However, it was Janeil Hoilett who increased Toronto's lead in the 25th minute.
Hammerheads duo Samuel Ochoa and Steven Miller had several attempted finishes in the first half on loose balls in the penalty area. Ochoa's best attempt of the night was a header off a cross by Miller knocked out by Toronto goalkeeper Chris Konopka. Hammerheads forward Sunny Jane also tallied several shot attempts during the match with a mix of volleys and long range opportunities while also serving crosses for his teammates to attack on goal.
Toronto forward Andrew Wiedeman came close to putting another point on the board for Toronto with a close-range shot deflected off Roberts which ultimately resulted in a handball and allowed Wilmington to regain possession.
It was trainee Marc Godelman with the lone goal of the night for the Hammerheads in the 85th minute that prevented their side from remaining scoreless.
The Hammerheads are scheduled to host Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire Reserves on Saturday, June 21 at Legion Stadium as they continue their USL PRO regular season. Tickets now available.
