Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release

Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC announce the addition of forward Casey Townsend from Oklahoma City Energy FC.

Townsend, 26, played college soccer at the University of Maryland between 2008 and 2011. The University of Maryland hits home for a few other Hammerheads including General Manager, Jason Arnold, and Midfielder, Mael Corboz. During his time at Maryland, Townsend was named as a 2011 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, 2011 NSCAA All-American First Team and All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team in both 2010 and 2011.

After college, Townsend's professional career took off starting when Chivas USA selected Townsend in the first round (No. 5 overall) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Townsend made his debut as a 77th-minute substitute during a 1-0 loss against Houston Dynamo on March 11, 2012.

On January 25, 2013, Townsend was traded to D.C. United in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

On March 19, 2013, Townsend was loaned to United's USL Pro affiliate Richmond Kickers for the 2013 season. Townsend scored his first goals for Richmond on April 13, 2013 en route to a 4-1 victory over Charleston Battery. His immediate success in Richmond, along with United's scoring woes to begin the 2013 campaign resulted in Townsend being recalled for the April 21 fixture against Philadelphia, although Townsend did not make an appearance.

Townsend would make his debut with D.C. United on May 11, 2013 when the club played at FC Dallas. Townsend's first shot of the game came in the ninth minute, which hit off the post. Townsend played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL in 2014, and signed with the Oklahoma City Energy FC of the USL Pro for the 2015 season.

Townsend elaborated on his joining of the Hammerheads, "I have heard only good things about the Wilmington Hammerheads organization. They have good coaching staff in place, as well as a very good team that wants to compete for a championship. I hope to score some goals and help them in any way I can."

Head coach Mark Briggs stated, "Casey will be a fantastic addition to our squad and hopefully bring us much needed firepower. He has the experience and drive to help us in many ways."
