
Wilmington Hammerheads Announce the Transfer of Casey Townsend

Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads announce the transfer of striker Casey Townsend to FC Cincinnati. Per terms of the transfer agreement, Townsend will not suit up against Wilmington in this Sunday's match and no additional contract details will be disclosed per USL and team policy.
The 27 -year-old joins FCC after playing with the Wilmington Hammerheads in 2016, where he scored a pair of goals and an assist for five points.
Townsend elaborated on his joining FCC, "I am thankful to my Wilmington coaches, teammates, and staff for everything they have done for me during my time here. I wish them nothing but the best as the season comes to an end, and greatly look forward to a promising future with FC Cincinnati."
Oklahoma City Energy FC transferred Townsend to Wilmington, where he joined the Port City team in May. Before joining Wilmington, Townsend played at the University of Maryland between 2008 and 2011. The University of Maryland hits home for a few other Hammerheads including General Manager, Jason Arnold, and former midfielder, Mael Corboz. During his time at Maryland, Townsend was named as a 2011 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, 2011 NSCAA All-American First Team, and All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team in both 2010 and 2011.
After college, Townsend's professional career took off starting when Chivas USA selected Townsend in the first round (No. 5 overall) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft . Townsend made his debut as a 77th-minute substitute during a 1-0 loss against Houston Dynamo on March 11, 2012.
On January 25, 2013, Townsend was traded to D.C. United in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft . Townsend would make his debut with D.C. United on May 11, 2013 when the club played at FC Dallas. Townsend's first shot of the game came in the ninth minute, which hit off the post.
On March 19, 2013, Townsend was loaned to United's USL affiliate Richmond Kickers for the 2013 season. Townsend scored his first goals for Richmond on April 13, 2013 en route to a 4-1 victory over Charleston Battery . His immediate success in Richmond resulted in Townsend being recalled for the April 21 fixture against Philadelphia, although Townsend did not make an appearance.
Townsend would make his debut with D.C. United on May 11, 2013 when the club played at FC Dallas. Townsend's first shot of the game came in the ninth minute, which hit off the post. Townsend played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL in 2014, and signed with the Oklahoma City Energy FC of the USL Pro for the 2015 season.
Despite losing the young talent, Wilmington proudly supports Townsend's future with FCC. General Manager, Jason Arnold, added, "The club would like to thank Casey for all of his contributions to the Hammerheads this season and we wish him all the best."
