Tulsa Shock News Release
TULSA, Okla. (February 6, 2012) - For the third consecutive year, Williams and the Tulsa Shock have partnered to honor inspirational women who serve Tulsa and the surrounding area with relentless dedication and passion while impacting the lives of area youth and the entire community.
University of Oklahoma women's basketball coach Sherri Coale will speak at a pre-game reception for all the nominees on June 23 when the Tulsa Shock hosts the Indiana Fever at the BOK Center.
"I am thrilled to play a small role in helping honor the Williams Women of Inspiration and the 40th anniversary of Title IX," Coale said. "The incredible opportunities afforded women today are a direct result of the passionate efforts of those who have gone before-those who would not settle, those who insistently believed in the potential and the power of our gender. The Williams Women represent that same spirit of dogged determination as they have relentlessly impacted the community of Tulsa. I look forward to meeting the honorees as we so appropriately celebrate their contributions at the Tulsa Shock game."
All nominees and honorees will be invited to attend a pre-game reception hosted at the BOK Center. Honorees will receive five photo slots in a pre- game montage with a public announcement, a concourse table to promote an organization or cause of their choice, two tickets to the game, on court recognition, $50 gift certificate to Wild Fork, $100 gift certificate to Ihloff Salon and Day Spa, a Tulsa Shock T-Shirt, and a token of appreciation from Williams and the Tulsa Shock. The winner will be awarded a trip to the 2013 National Women of Inspiration Luncheon celebration courtesy of World Travel.
"Coach Sherri Coale embodies exactly why Williams is proud to again join the Tulsa Shock for the Williams Women of Inspiration Night," Director of Diversity and Community Relations at Williams Alison Anthony said. "Her passion to make a difference and commitment to excellence help Sherri motivate her players toward success on the basketball court and in the classroom. When they leave her program, these student athletes know what it takes to achieve their dreams and full potential. We at Williams want to recognize women in the community like Coach Coale - heroes among us who inspire others with their own determination to make our community stronger."
The deadline to nominate an individual for the award is April 1, 2012. All nominees will be evaluated by a joint committee formed by Williams and the Tulsa Shock. Five honorees and winner for the award will be selected by May 1, 2012.
"The Tulsa Shock is proud to partner with Williams to recognize deserving inspirational women in our community," Shock President Steve Swetoha said. "Being the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, this year's celebrations promises to be even more special. Players in the WNBA are role models for thousands of young female athletes and we share Williams' commitment to embrace diversity and empower women."
