William Mayer Named Owner of Virginia Destroyers
September 7, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Wednesday, September 7, 2011 - The United Football League's Virginia Destroyers have announced WILLIAM MAYER as the new owner of the team. Mayer has been a UFL investor and owner since the league's inception, owning the New York Sentinels that played during the inaugural 2009 UFL season. In 2010, the Sentinels moved to Connecticut, becoming the Hartford Colonials with Mayer at the helm.
Following the UFL's decision to suspend operations in Hartford for the 2011 season, Mayer remained committed to the league as an investor. He has now assumed control of the Destroyers, coached by legendary NFL veteran MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER. While the team is on solid financial footing, Mayer welcomes the opportunity to attract local investors to further show the Destroyers' commitment to Hampton Roads.
"I know the Destroyers have gone through a period of uncertainty," said Mayer. "What has impressed me the most is the unwavering support of fans and the Hampton Roads community during those tough times. I wanted to become a part of that spirit and commitment."
Mayer, founder of Park Avenue Equity, has been involved in private equity investing for more than 35 years. He worked for The First Boston Corporation (now Credit Suisse), a major investment bank, for 23 years. During his career at First Boston, he held numerous management positions, including President and Chief Executive Officer. Mayer served as Chairman of First Boston's Investment Committee for eight years.
"I, as well as the entire Virginia Destroyers organization, am very pleased Bill Mayer has taken on the role and responsibilities as owners of the Virginia Destroyers," said coach Schottenheimer. "I believe his ownership will further enhance the stability of not only the Virginia Destroyers, but also of the United Football League."
Mayer was a Professor and Dean of the College of Business at the University of Maryland from 1992 through 1996. He is currently a board member of the following public companies: BlackRock Kelso, DynaVox, Inc, and Lee Enterprises, and is a trustee of the Columbia Group of Mutual Funds.
During the past 30 years, Mayer has been a board member of numerous other public and private companies. He is also a director on a number of Park Avenue Equity portfolio companies. Mayer was Chairman of the Aspen Institute from 2000 to 2008, and is currently on its Executive Committee.
He is past Chairman of the Board of the University of Maryland, and is currently on its Executive Committee. Mayer is also a board member of the Acumen Fund, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Vice Chairman of the Middle East Investment Initiative.
Mayer holds a BS and an MBA from the University of Maryland.
