April 11, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Wichita Wild News Release
On Monday afternoon the Wichita Wild made the decision to change direction at the head coaching position. Ken Matous was relieved of his duties after a disappointing 0-5 start to the season. Matous was named head coach on August 19, 2008 and led the Wild to a 17-16 record in regular season games. The Wild went 4-2 in postseason play and made two appearances in conference championship games.
Assistant Morris Lolar has been given the reins to the team as Interim Head Coach. Lolar has been a defensive assistant for the Wild since 2009 and is the fourth head coach in Wild history. Lolar was a two-time first team All-American defensive back for Friends University and All-City player at Wichita South. He was the final cut of the Kansas City Chiefs in training camp prior to the 1993 NFL season. Lolar went on to play professionally for six years in the Canadian Football League. His first four years in Canada he played for the Edmonton Eskimos (1993-96), who captured the Grey Cup in 1993 and were runners-up in 1996. Lolar is the only native Wichitan to be a part of a Grey Cup Championship team. Lolar finished his playing career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1997 and 1998.
After his playing career, Lolar coached at Wichita East, Wichita North and Wichita Northwest High Schools. He also served as defensive backs coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Currently Lolar is on the coaching staff at Friends University. Lolar was elected to the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
Defensive Coordinator Troy Black was elevated to Associate Head Coach. Black has been with the franchise since 2008.
The Wild's season continues on Saturday night vs. Amarillo at Hartman Arena. Kickoff is set for 7:05 pm. To purchase tickets to the game, call the Hartman Arena Box Office at 316-927-3999, visit www.stage1tickets.com or stop by the Hartman Arena Box Office in Park City.
