Wichita B-52s Receive Good Apple Award from Wichita Board of Education

April 22, 2014 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) - Wichita B-52s News Release

Monday night Joey Pindell was presented a Good Apple Award from the Wichita Board of Education for our reading initiative and other contributions to Griffith Elementary.

"[The B-52s] have been instrumental in assisting us with various student incentive programs. We appreciate the team's passion and commitment for student success!" Griffith Elementary Principal Linda Brown

"It is a great honor to be recognized for our contributions to Griffith. We are privileged to have the ability to help promote education and connect with students. Interacting with the students has really been a lot of fun and we are looking forward to growing the program with Griffith and the opportunity to introduce the program to other schools in the area. I am proud of our squad and their tremendous enthusiasm -this award is accepted on behalf of the entire team." Wichita B-52s Owner Joey Pindell

The reading program encouraged students to log reading hours with their families and provided incentives for various milestones reached. In addition, B-52 players made multiple visits to the school to read to the classrooms and meet the students. Griffith reported that 3 out of 4 students showed improved reading scores after the initiative was launched.

"Visiting the school and reading to the students is always an exciting and humbling experience. Many of them go to our games and look up to us players, so it's good we can interact with them on a personal level and give back. I enjoyed it especially because I have been in their shoes." Wichita B-52s Midfielder Travis Pittman

The Good Apple Award program allows schools and administrative support centers to recognize employees, volunteers, and partners who provide exemplary service to the district and its students. Award recipients are nominated and selected at the building where their efforts are most profoundly felt.
