WHL Announces Weekly Award Winners

April 1, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alta. - Wenatchee Wild alternate captain Briley Wood has been named Tempo WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 31, 2024, the Western Hockey League announced Monday.

The 21-year-old led the Wenatchee Wild to the team's first playoff victory with four goals, three assists and a +2 rating in two postseason games.

Wood led a rollercoaster comeback performance for the Wild in Game 1 against the Kelowna Rockets on March 29. He got Wenatchee on the board with a powerplay marker by jamming a rebound past Jari Kykkanen midway through the first period, though the Wild still trailed 2-1. Wood tallied again with a one-timer from the faceoff dot destined for the top shelf and completed a hat trick back a powerplay tap-in. The 6-foot-3, 188-pound forward capped off an incredible night with a fourth goal that would stand as the game-winner in an 8-6 barnburner.

Wood helped get the Wild break through again in Game 2 by feeding Sam Ward for a one-timer from the point, though Kelowna would go on to a 3-1 victory to tie the series.

The Rivers, Man. product has seven goals, four assists and a +7 rating in 23 career playoff games. Wood played a key role in the Winnipeg ICE's run to the WHL Championship Series in 2023 prior to the team's relocation to Washington.

Wenatchee looks to re-take the series lead against the Rockets as the First-Round matchup shifts to Kelowna for Games 3 and 4. The Wild and Rockets are back in action on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:05 p.m. PST at Prospera Place.

2024 NHL DRAFT-ELIGIBLE FORWARD PARASCAK NAMED KAL TIRE WHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Calgary, Alta. - Prince George Cougars forward Terik Parascak has been named Kal Tire WHL Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 31, 2024, the Western Hockey League announced Monday.

The 17-year-old scored four goals in two games in the first weekend of WHL Playoffs- including a hat trick in his WHL playoff debut against Spokane.

With Game 1 tied 1-1 in the first period, Parascak set up shop on the edge of the Chief's crease and hammered a rebound into the net on the powerplay to give Prince George its first lead of the night. He added a second by pouncing on a loose puck in the crease in the middle frame to extend the Cougars' lead to 4-1 and capped off the hat trick with a slick redirection on an Ondrej Becher shot. Prince George would take a 6-1 win in Game 1, with Parascak's first powerplay marker standing as the game-winner. The rookie would also be named first star of the game.

The following night, Prince George surged to a 6-4 lead in Game 2. Spokane would try to claw back in with a four-goal third period, but Parascak outwaited a sprawling Chiefs defender to ice the game with an empty-net goal.

The Lethbridge, Alta. product finished first in the regular-season rookie scoring race with 43 goals and 62 assists for 105 points in 68 games.

Parascak, a 5-foot-11, 179-pound winger, is a top prospect coming into the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He is ranked 14th among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Parascak was originally selected by the Cougars in the fourth round, 76th overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

He was named Kal Tire WHL Rookie of the Week five times in the regular season and earned Rookie of the Month honours in December and September/October.

Prince George's First Round series now shifts south of the border. Game 3 between the Cougars and Chiefs is set for Tuesday, April 2 at 7:05 p.m. PST at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
