Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - Greeneville Astros' third baseman Tyler White homered in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie with the Princeton Rays and send the Astros to a club record eighth straight win on Friday night at Pioneer Park. The club's previous record for consecutive wins was seven, which was set earlier this season. With a season record of 18-10, the Astros are sitting atop the Appalachian League standings with a half-game lead over the Elizabethton Twins.
Like both games of the doubleheader on Thursday night, the Astros jumped out to a early lead. In the first inning, Marc Wik led off with a walk to give the Astros a base runner and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Then, with one out, Tyler White connected on a line drive RBI-double to left field to bring Wik home and put the Astros up 1-0.
Over the next four innings, both teams were held scoreless. Then, in the top of the sixth, the Twins were threatening. Elias Torres led off with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. With one out and the runner on third, Bralin Jackson singled to score Torres and even the game at 1-1.
With the game still tied going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Astros needed a run if they were going to complete the series sweep and maintain their win streak. With one out, Tyler White confidently stepped up to the plate and delivered the go-ahead score with a solo homer that easily cleared the left field wall. It was White's first home run since arriving in Greeneville less than a week ago. He finished the night 2-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI.
Greeneville's starting pitcher, Frederick Tiburcio, pitched 6.0 innings and gave up one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts. Austin Chrismon (2-0) held the Rays hitless over the next two innings and picked up the win. Then, Gonzalo Sanudo entered in the ninth inning and struck out the side to close the game and pick up his fourth save.
The Astros will travel to Johnson City to face the Cardinals over the next three days before returning home on Tuesday, July 23 to begin a nine-game homestand with a three-game series against those same Cardinals.
