West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - The Whitecaps rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell short as Great Lakes completed a three game sweep with a 9-7 win over West Michigan.
Even though they have lost four in a row for the second time this season, the Whitecaps magic number was reduced to 4 versus Lansing because the Lugnuts lost to Dayton, 10-4.
Matt Gomez de Segura made his first relief appearance as a Loon and allowed two and walks that led to all six Whitecaps run in the bottom of the ninth. Gomez de Segura was credited with just one third of an innings pitched.
The Whitecaps sent 12 to the plate in the ninth when Miguel Sanfler earned the save despite issuing a pair of walks.
West Michigan had a base runner in every inning, but scored only two innings.
The Loons turned ten double plays in the three game series, including three on Tuesday night.
Great Lakes jumped out to a 7-0 lead with two runs in each the second and third innings, then three runs in the fifth, all against West Michigan starting pitcher Angel Castro.
Reliever Jose Fragoso threw three perfect innings beginning in the sixth, but remained in the game for the top of the ninth and a fourth inning on the hill when he allowed a pair of runs, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Eduardo Perez went 4-for-5 for the Loons and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Carlos Santana was 2-for-4 with three RBI for Great Lakes.
James Skelton drove in a pair of runs for the Whitecaps.
No Hitter Connection: Justin Verlander threw a no hitter for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday in a 4-0 win over Milwaukee. It was the first no hitter pitched by a Tiger since Jack Morris no-hit the White Sox in Chicago on April 7, 1984. Both Whitecaps manager Tom Brookens and Loons manager Lance Parrish were in the lineup for the Tigers that day. On Tuesday, they were managing against each other as Verlander completed his no hitter.
