Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
Tonight at Swangard Stadium, 7:00 p.m. the Whitecaps (5-2-7, for 22 points) and Timbers (5-4-5, for 20 points) clash for the fourth and final time this regular season. The Whitecaps hold the slim edge in the season series winning the first tilt 1-0 while the other two encounters have ended in draws.
Last week the Whitecaps earned a huge 1-0 victory over a solid Puerto Rico squad in large thanks to the spark that Jay Alberts and Dave Morris provided as second half subs. Alberts and Morris entered the game in the 61st minute and only 12 minutes later connected for the decisive marker when Alberts volleyed his second game winning goal in four outings into the back of the onion bag.
Portland enters this weekend after an 11-day break and on an eight game unbeaten streak. Tricky midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar once again leads the Timbers offence with two goals and five assists. However, Alcaraz-Cuellar and the rest of the Timbers have not fared well against Vancouver due to some superb last minute heroics by Caps. Since entering the league in 2001, the Timbers have a 6W-15L-6T all-time record versus the Caps and have only won once at Swangard, a 3-1 victory on May 23, 2004.
Cascadia Cup:
Friday's match against Portland counts towards the Cascadia Cup. This geographical cup competition began in 2004, and is competed for annually by the Seattle Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps. The team with the most points from the head-to-head matches at the end of the season is declared the winner. The Timbers and Whitecaps are currently tied for the lead with six points each, while the Sounders trail with five points. The Whitecaps won both the 2004 and 2005 Cascadia Cups.
