
Wheeling Wildcats Sign Former WVU Standout Vaughn Rivers

Wheeling, WV- The Wheeling Wildcats have announced the signing of former West Virginia University standout Vaughn Rivers to a contract for the 2009 season. Rivers (5'9, 175) will make his professional debut for the Wildcats after starring at WVU as a Cornerback, Wide Receiver, and Return Specialist. Vaughn Rivers played at WVU from 2003-2007, serving as a permanent team captain and earning several honors during his career.
"We are very excited to have Vaughn Rivers signed for our 2009 championship run. He is a very explosive talent, who has the ability to contribute on both sides of the football. His ability in the return game gives us a chance to score anytime he gets his hands on the football," commented Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
Considered one of the top return men in the nation, Rivers finished his career 3rd All-Time in WVU history with 789 punt return yards. Rivers finished the 2007 season with 479 punt return yards, the most in a single-season in school history. Rivers 11.68 yards per punt return was 16th most in a season in school history. Rivers earned the Gridiron Gladiator Award, 1st Team All-Big East Conference by rivals.com, 2nd Team All-Big East, Big East Player of the Week vs. Mississippi State, Special Teams Champion Award, and was named to the Athletic Directors Honor Roll.
