Wheeling Wildcats Sign All-Star Linebacker Glenroy Watkins

Wheeling, WV- The Wheeling Wildcats have announced the signing of Linebacker Glenroy Watkins to a contract for the 2009 season. Watkins (6'2"-250) a product of The University of Central Florida comes to Wheeling from the Erie RiverRats of the AIFA. Watkins had received interest from several Arena Football League franchises following his standout 2008 season, prior to signing with the Wildcats. "Glenroy Watkins brings an intimidating, athletic presence to our defensive unit in 2009. He has the ability to be a game-changer from his linebacker position, and will be counted on to be a leader on our defensive unit," commented Wheeling Wildcats Head Coach Shawn Liotta.

During the 2008 AIFA Season, Watkins finished among the league leaders in several defensive categories including total tackles (46), tackles for loss (13.5), and sacks (11.5). He also forced two fumbles and recorded two safeties. Watkins finished as a finalist for the AIFA's Defensive Player of the Year Award, and was named to the All-Star Team Following the 2008 Season. Watkins was a standout defensive performer for Central Florida in Conference USA from 2004-2005. He appeared in eleven games as a junior in 2004, but his senior season in 2005 was cut short due to a knee injury. Following his career with Central Florida, Watkins played for the Osceola Ghostriders in the World Indoor Football League prior to joining Erie in 2008.
