Danbury Whalers News Release

An afternoon affair between the Danbury Whalers and Danville Dashers saw both teams begin the game with a slower pace than yesterday's lopsided tilt. The Whalers again recorded the first goal courtesy of Matt Caranci, assisted by Igor Karlov and Andy Willock. The Whalers would score again three minutes later as Cody Ayers scored a power play goal, assisted by Harry Radovich and Steve Brown. Igor Karlov extended the lead to three after taking a breakout pass from Mike Henderson and skated through three Dashers defensemen before snapping a shot over the shoulder of goalie James Robbins. The Dashers were able to answer less than thirty seconds later with a Joe Pace power play goal, assisted by Justin Barr and Ray Trembley. Shots on goal for the first period were 17-9 in favor of Danbury.

The second period saw end to end action and plenty of long passes, but neither team was able to convert for a goal. Both teams played a clean period, as no penalties were assessed. Shots on goal for the period were 18-11 in favor of Danbury.

Danville came out hungry for the third period, pinning the Whalers in their own end for the first three minutes of the period. Their best opportunity came off a broken play as goaltender Mike Brown was left scrambling at the side of the net before the puck nearly trickled across the goal line. Defenseman Steve Brown leapt across the crease and was able to poke the puck wide with inches to spare. With that scare behind them, the Whalers turned on the offensive pressure. Rob Dongara scored 3:56into the period, assisted by Tim Richter and Harry Radovich. Fifteen seconds later Brad Norkum would add to the offense, stepping in from the point and firing a shot just under the crossbar. Igor Karlov and Mike Henderson were credited with assists. Matt Caranci would finish the scoring with his second of the game, assisted by Andy Willock and Steve Brown. For his efforts, Caranci was named the first star of the game. The victory gives the Whalers an eleven point lead over the second place Dayton Demonz. The Danbury Whalers will be in action againSaturday night, with a 7:35PM faceoff against the resurgent Watertown Privateers.
