Whalers Outrun Dashers, Score Ten Goals

Danbury, CT -- The Danbury Whalers entered tonight's game undefeated in regulation at home, while the Danville Dashers came to the Nutmeg State after losing 9 to 4 to the Watertown Privateers the night previous. The first period saw a Federal Hockey League record broken as Tim Richter scored just 15 seconds into the game after Rob Dongara shot the puck off the crossbar and Richter buried the rebound. Steve Brown also received an assist on the play. The Dashers were quick to respond, however, as just a minute and seven seconds later Brian Soskin capitalized off an errant pass and was left uncovered in the slot. After trading minor penalties, Harry Radovich scored his first goal of the season on the power play, with Ryan Patsch and Steve Brown picking up the assists. The Whalers' offense was prolific in the first period, recording 29 shots on goal.

The second period saw more offensive pressure from the Whalers as they potted another two goals. Tim Richter scored his second goal of the game less than four minutes into the game, with Rob Dongara and David Lun credited with the assists. Dashers goalie Jeromy Semtner was pulled after giving up 4 goals on 33 shots, leading to James Robbins third appearance of the year. His blank sheet was short lived, as David Lun would get himself back on the score sheet with a goal less than three minutes later, as Rob Dongara would collect his third assist of the game. The play was started by goalie Mike Brown, and Brown recorded his fifth assist of the season. Shots for the second period were 23 to 7 in favor of the Whalers.

Danbury continued to pour it on offensively in the third period. Rob Dongara scored his first of two goals in the period, courtesy of a pass from CJ DelVaglio, while Scott Morongell picked up the secondary assist. On the next shift, Brad Norkum pinched from his defensive position and fed the puck back to Morongell. A quick pass to Ryan Patsch saw the Philadelphia native left alone in the slot, and he scored twenty one seconds after Dongara's goal. This led to the second goaltending change for the Dashers, as Jeromy Semtner was reinserted for the balance of the game. Tim Richter would complete his first professional hat trick over a minute and a half later, with DelVaglio and Steve Brown getting assists.

That goal marked the end of any civility between the two teams, with multiple fights recorded with under nine minutes to go in the game. Brad Norkum and Jamie Zaleski were the first to square off, while Andy Willock and Brian Soskin traded fists at the end of the next shift. Matt Caranci and Edgars Ozolins, while not dropping the gloves, were also assessed matching misconduct penalties as the referees attempted to regain control of the game. Rob Dongara and Mike Henderson added unassisted goals after tempers cooled off. For Henderson, the goal was his first as a professional, a fact appreciated by the near sellout crowd at the Danbury Ice Arena. Tim Richter was named player of the game, while the Whalers recorded a total of 70 shots on goal. Both teams will be in action again tomorrow night with a 5:05PM scheduled faceoff.
