Whalers Renew Rivalry with Outlaws with 5-1 Win

Danbury CT- In the season opener at the Danbury Ice Arena that saw a repeat of the Federal Hockey championship series. The pace was back and forth but the Whalers broke the scoring open when Mike Atkinson scored at 16:26 of the 1st period with assists from Andrew Willock and Toms Tilla.

The game continued at a subdued pace, punctuated by the 1st periods only penalty to Jamie Zaleski who received 2 minutes for high sticking. The second period saw the Whalers break through Chris Whitley's goaltending twice within 10 seconds as Max Mobley wheeled and shot from the slot Mike Atkinson fired a wrist shot over the goalies shoulder. Mobley's goal was assisted by Cody Ayers and James Kirkwood, while Atkinson's second was assisted by Andrew Willock. Kelly Miller then wrapped home a rebound giving the whalers a 4-0 lead at 19:48, after Mobley shot a pass from Anthony Pisano. Off the ensuing faceoff Julian Fraser of the Whalers squared off against Tyler Matheson of the Outlaws in the games 1st fight at 19:50. In the 3rd Greg Holt scored off of the powerplay rush with a forehand- backhand move after the Gentry Zollars pass at 15:54, after Chris Leveille took a slashing penalty. Former Whaler Martin Moucha spoiled goalie Mike Brown's shutout bid as he put home a goal at 19:57 of the 3rd period, with assists from Paul Arnott jr, and Nathan Oke.

The Whalers will travel to Williamsport tomorrow for the 2nd game of the home and home series, Friday October 26th at 7:35pm.
