Danbury Whalers News Release
DANBURY, CT - It is rare to have a sequel that comes close to the original. Tonight, the Danbury Whalers and New Jersey Outlaws attempted to recreate the drama and passion of the season opener, won by the Whalers 5-4. However, three third-period goals by New Jersey vaulted them into sole possession of first place in the Federal Hockey League with a 6-2 victory over the Whalers before 1,244 at the Danbury Ice Arena.
The Outlaws got goals from John Goffredo and Kevin Cooper to take a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Whalers fought back in the second, as Corey Fulton rocketed a shot below the bar at 14:23, assisted by Sean O'Malley and Lucas Schott. Greg Holt tied the game on the powerplay with a nearly identical shot, set up by Chris Seifert at 16:37. Outlaws captain Travis Kauffeldt got New Jersey the lead with one minute to go in the second, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. In the third period, the Whalers constantly challenged Outlaws goalie Dan McWhinney. However, McWhinney was to the task, stopping all 13 Whalers shots in the third period as part of a 42-save evening. Craig Cole scored late in the third to put the game out of reach, while a late slashing major gave New Jersey a man-advantage for the rest of the game. Kauffeldt and William McCreary each scored on the prolonged power play. Special teams played a key factor in this contest, as New Jersey killed 10 of 11 Whalers power plays. Peter Vetri stopped 30 of 36 in the loss.
The Whalers look to end this skid in Brooklyn Friday night as they face the Aviators. Danbury will host Cape Cod for the weekend at the Ice Arena. Saturday will be New Haven Nighthawk Night, as the team honors the legacy of the New Haven Nighthawks. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games.
