Danbury Whalers News Release

The fans who came to the Danbury Ice Arena were hoping to see a repeat of the wild night on Saturday, where the teams combined for 128 minutes in the first 11 seconds of play in a Danbury Whalers 9-2 win. The game was certainly a bizarre one, but not for the same reasons. The Cape Cod Bluefins tallied a late shorthanded goal and added an empty-netter to win 5-4 in Federal Hockey League action.

The Whalers took the first-period lead on the power play, as Chris Seifert redirected the Nick Deschenes shot from the point. Greg Holt got the other assist at 14:36. In the second period, what seemed like a normal game started down a twisty road. The Whalers came out late for the start of the second period, and Garrett Peters scored on the subsequent power play. Whaler forwrd Alec Kirschner scored his team-high 11th goal on a shorthanded break at 4:59 from Greg Holt and Deschenes. Kevin McCready tied the game at 2 before the period ended. In the third, a Whaler turnover sprung Dan Gordon who gave Cape Cod a 3-2 lead. The Whalers continued to hack away on the man advantage and finally tied the game as Deschenes fired a rocket into the net, with assists going to Kirschner and Sean O'Malley at 15:47. A late Cape Cod penalty gave Danbury another power play, but the Bluefins counter-punched and Peters gave Cape Cod a 4-3 lead with 3:06 to go. The Bluefins added another shorthanded goal but Stratford, Connecticut native Todd Chinova got his first professional goal with 15 seconds left to set the final score. While there were no brawls like the previous game, Whalers forward Devin Guy did drop the mitts with Brian Mock, while Lucas Schott fought JD Gordon.

The teams will play again at the Ice Arena on Wednesday night at 7:35. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games. Get your tickets by visiting thedanburywhalers.com or by calling 973-713-7547.
