WFC2 Captain Kyle Greig Looks Forward to Battle against Former Team
June 23, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 News Release
On Saturday, Whitecaps FC 2 captain Kyle Greig will be lining up opposite some familiar faces on the other team when the 'Caps visit Oklahoma City Energy FC at Taft Stadium.
The WFC2 captain spent the last two seasons with Energy FC before coming to the Vancouver this past January. Greig was a key piece of Energy FC's offence during those two years, leading the club in scoring in 2014 with nine goals and two assists, and adding seven goals and an assist in 2015. Greig made two playoff appearances last year with OKC as they made it to the Western Conference finals before being eliminated by LA Galaxy II.
His experience is only one reason that Greig was named captain of the young WFC2 group this year. At 26, Greig is considered a veteran among a team whose average age is 21. His maturity is something that hasn't been overlooked by head coach Alan Koch.
"I think he's a great role model in how he carries himself as a professional, and his work rate is second to none. If you see a teammate doing that, then you're going to have instantaneous respect for him," commended Koch.
Greig knows that their youth is their greatest challenge when facing more experienced teams like Energy FC, but that doesn't mean they don't have their advantages. Greig says this group reminds him of his college team, "there aren't any egos on the team and everybody is fighting for each other. I think that is our best quality - having a group that is going to stick together through the whole game."
As for any inside information, Greig says he doesn't have much to share with the rest of the team, but he might have some on a specific player. "My best friend is the captain [Michael Thomas] so it'll be fun to be at the coin toss with him at the beginning of the game."
Sure, it will be fun at the coin toss, but after that it's all business. As one of the 'Caps top strikers, Greig will no doubt be going one-on-one with Thomas, a key defender for Energy FC.
Greig paces the 'Caps with 10 goals so far this season, second only to Jack McBean from LA Galaxy II. Guiding the fast-developing 'Caps to a tough road win would make one sweet home-coming for the captain.
Kickoff on Saturday night is at 5 p.m. Watch the match live on whitecapsfc2.com.
