Islanders Look to Get Back on Track against Charlotte Friday
June 23, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Harrisburg, PA - City Islanders FC will look to build off of the momentum they built in the waning minutes of their last game when they face the Charlotte Independence this Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at FNB Field.
Aaron Wheeler almost willed the Islanders to an improbable comeback in their last outing against Montreal FC. After falling down 3-0 early in the second half the Islanders stormed back to get within one, but saw the tying goal ring off the post at the very last second.
Friday's eastern league tilt will prove vital to the remainder of the Islanders season. They currently sit outside of playoff contention. With a win they will start to move into a better position to make a late season run to get into the postseason.
Charlotte comes to City Island on their worst run of play of the season. After starting the season with only two loses in their first nine games, they have only earned points in two of the last four matches.
The first game of the season between these two came during Charlotte's early season hot streak. City went into Ramblewood Soccer Complex in Charlotte and despite getting an early goal in the opening minutes they ultimately fell 2-1 on goals from Charlotte's Calvert and Estrada.
Wheeler's two goal performance in the Montreal game vaulted him to the top of the Islanders scoring list with five goals on the season. City's attack with Paul Wilson, Jose Barril and Bobby Warshaw continued in the Montreal game, but just couldn't break through with the opening goal. If City is going to make a run for the postseason this year, they will need their attacking players to convert.
Charlotte features five players who have scored two or more goals this season. Their leading scorer is Jorge Harrera with four goal and two assist for a total of ten points. Charlotte have used a few different goalies this season, but the John Berner has been the started in their last four games and has conceded five goals in those outings.
The game in Harrisburg will be the final meeting between the two teams this season unless they end up meeting in the postseason.
City will be back on the road following the game on Friday for the first leg the Keystone Derby Cup against cross-state rival the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. This should be the second meeting between the two Pennsylvania teams, but the first game at the beginning of the season was canceled due to weather.
