
Westerners Sign Two Ivy League Pitchers

Danbury, CT- April 9, 2013: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of Columbia University's Zachary Tax and Cornell University's Roberto Suppa.
Zachary "Zack" Tax (White Plains, N.Y.) will be returning for his second season as a Westerner. Zack is in his junior year pitching for the Columbia Lions and has appeared in six games this season, all in relief, posting a 2-0 record. Zack has struck out eight batters over 12.1 innings, while only walking one. For the Westerners, Zack was 1-2 with 17 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work. Zack was voted Columbia's Rookie of the Year during the 2011 season. Zack is the son of Joseph and Elena Tax and plans to major in political science.
Roberto Suppa (Connor, Ontario) is in his sophomore season pitching for the Cornell Big Red. Roberto has appeared in five games this year, with three starts. Roberto has an 0-1 record, with 12 strikeouts over 17 innings this season. Prior to Cornell, Roberto was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 26th round in the 2011 Major League Baseball Entry Draft. Roberto played for the Canadian 18U team in 2010 and 2011, and he earned a silver medal in the 2010 Canadian Cup while pitching for the Ontario 17U Youth Team, posting a 0.00 ERA. Roberto is the son of Connor and Carla Suppa, and is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell.
Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerners, commented, "It's great to have Zack Tax returning for a second season. He is the consummate team player and his experience will bode well for Roberto and our other pitchers as they adjust to the challenging schedule we play each summer."
In addition the Danbury Westerners have announced that their annual Celebrity Breakfast to introduce the 2013 Westerners to the community will be held on Friday June 7th at 7:30AM at the Amber Room in Danbury. Former New York Met pitcher and current broadcaster Ron Darling is the keynote speaker. Reservations are required. The Danbury Westerners 9th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at Richter Park, Danbury CT. Former professional athletes tentatively scheduled to appear include New York Yankee World Series Champion Tommy John, New York Met World Series Champion Tim Teufel, and New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Jeff Feagles.
