Westerners Sign Two Freshman from Fordham

Danbury, CT- April 3, 2013: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of Fordham University's Jimmy Murphy and Joseph Runco

Jimmy Murphy (South Orange, NJ) is a freshman pitcher for the Fordham University Rams. Jimmy has pitched in relief in three games for the Rams this season, holding the opponents to a .208 batting average, while striking out four batters. Previously Jimmy pitched at Colombia High School, where he was named team MVP and Essex County Player of the Year in his senior season. During his senior year, Jimmy struck out 93 batters over 66 innings, and only allowed six earned runs. Jimmy has yet to declare a major.

Joseph "Joe" Runco (Spring Brook Township, PA) is a freshman infielder at Fordham University. Joe has started all 25 games for the Rams this season. Joe is one of only three players on the Rams with double digit RBIs with 10, and he leads Fordham with 9 stolen bases. While at North Pocono High School, Joe hit .446 with an OBP of .600, earning All-Conference honors as both a second baseman and a shortstop. Joe is a finance major.

Paul Schaffer, Danbury Westerners President, commented, "We have had great success in the past with Fordham baseball players contributing to the Westerners, and I am confident that Jimmy and Joe will continue this tradition."

In addition the Danbury Westerners have announced that their annual Celebrity Breakfast to introduce the 2013 Westerners to the community will be held on Friday June 7th at 7:30AM at the Amber Room in Danbury. Former New York Met pitcher and current broadcaster Ron Darling is the keynote speaker. Reservations are required. The Danbury Westerners 9th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at Richter Park, Danbury CT. Former professional athletes tentatively scheduled to appear include New York Yankee World Series Champion Tommy John and New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Jeff Feagles.
