Danbury Westerners News Release
Danbury, CT- May 14, 2013: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of Georgia Tech University's Alex Cruz and Tulane University's Chad Vanaman
Alex Cruz (Woodstock, GA) is a junior pitcher for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Alex has appeared in 21 games for the Yellow Jackets, all in relieve, posting a 2-2 record. Alex has struck out 22 batters over 30.2 innings pitched. In the 2012 season, Alex was named to the College Baseball Insider Honorable Mention All-American Team after posting an 8-3 record with a 1.83 ERA. Alex has emerged as one of the most effective late-inning pitchers in the ACC. Alex is the son of Rafael and Lucrecia Cruz and is majoring in management. Alex will be joining his teammate Daniel Spingola, a Westerners All-Star in 2012, in Danbury this summer.
Chad Vanaman (Corpus Christi, TX) is a redshirt freshman at Tulane University. Chad has seen limited action this year, appearing in two games for the Green Wave. While in high school, Chad lettered three times for Calallen High School. Chad also was named to the All-State Second-Team in his senior year, where he helped his team win the district championship. Chad is the son of Chuck and Cleo Vanaman. He will be joining his Tulane teammate Andrew Garner, a 2012 NECBL All-Star for the Westerners, this summer.
Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerners commented," We have had tremendous success with the ballplayers we have recruited from Georgia Tech and Tulane, and I'm confident that Alex and Chad will be strong contributors as we embark on our journey to bring the NECBL Championship to Danbury this summer."
In other Westerners' news, Andrew Garner hit for the cycle this past weekend, the first for the Tulane Green Wave since 2001. Andrew went 5-for-5 in the game while driving in seven runs to help Tulane pick up the 15-9 win against the University of Central Florida.
In addition the Danbury Westerners are currently recruiting host families for the 2013 summer. We request your willingness to welcome a young athlete into your home and provide a private bedroom for the summer (first week of June through the first week of August). Food arrangements are up to you, and most players have their own cars for transportation. For those who don't, we pair them up with those who do. The benefits of being a Host Family are simple- the players quickly become a part of your family. You'll build relationships that last a lifetime. You will also receive season tickets so you'll be able to watch collegiate level baseball all summer long, and if you have young athletes of your own, the players serve as excellent mentors. Please contact Shelley Pitser at jspitser@msn.com if you are interested or need additional information.
The Danbury Westerners 9th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at Richter Park, Danbury CT. Former professional athletes tentatively scheduled to appear include New York Yankee World Series Champion Tommy John and New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Jeff Feagles. For information on registration, please contact Mike Malone at 203-788-3408. Sponsorships are also available.
